What are EL/Civics Classes?
EL/Civics Classes are English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. The main goal of our EL / CIVICS program is to teach students English reading, writing, and comprehension skills. The classes will prepare students to become better citizens by learning English and learning about the U.S. systems of government, banking, education, immigration, and healthcare. We also prepare students who wish to become U.S. citizens by covering the INS “100 questions.” We take this approach because students must demonstrate the ability to understand, speak, and write English, in addition to showing knowledge in U. S. government and history in the INS interview for citizenship. After completing this course, many students move on to Adult Basic Education or GED classes at Austin Community College.
