Important information about Adult Education ESL classes:   Adult Education ESL classes are primarily for lower level ESL students (beginning and low intermediate).  If you believe your English is at a higher level, you may want to consider ESL classes through ACC's continuing education department  (click here for continuing education) or ESL classes through ACC's academic program (click here for academic ESL).  Also available for higher level non-native English speakers:  one-year combined ESL/Dental Assistant Program (click here for more information) and a 16-week combined ESL/Adminstrative Assistant Program (click here for more information).

To Enroll: You must attend an orientation session (up to 3 meetings).  During the orientation, you will be assessed (tested) in order to determine which level class you need.  You will be placed in a class at the end of orientation.

Are you a student with
special needs?

Orientation: Click here for ESL orientation schedule.

Those eligible to attend: Any person 18 years old or older living permanently in the U.S.  17 year-old students may attend with a copy of a withdrawal letter from the last school they attended. 16 year-old students may attend with a copy of an official court order and a withdrawal letter from the last school they attended.  B and F visas are NOT eligible for this program (please call 223-5123 is you have a question about your visa).

Locations:   We do not publish a schedule of classes, because class location, availability, and level change as needed.  We try to offer classes in North, South, and Central Austin in the morning, afternoon, and evening--but all classes are not available at all times and in all parts of Austin.  Most of our classes meet 4 to 5 times weekly, with very few classes meeting less times weekly.  Please remember to stay enrolled in our classes, you must be present 75% of the time, so choose a class that you will be able to attend.   Some of our partners/locations include Literacy Austin Austin Independent School District, Austin Housing, Austin Area Urban League, and Austin Public Library .  We also offer classes at ACC's Riverside, Rio Grande, South Austin, and Eastview campuses.

What are English as Second Language Classes?
English as a second language (ESL) classes are for people who want to speak and write English for everyday use. They help people on jobs, in college, and in everyday life. After studying ESL, many people move to Adult Basic Education, GED, or college-level classes. We also offer English Literacy/Civics/Citizenship Preparation classes-FREE. Click
here for more information.

Adult Education Transition
A person who knows little English may study English as a second language in classes in the Adult Education Department until they know enough English to move to more advanced classes. Students usually move to one of these kinds of classes:

    1. Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes.
    2. General Educational Development
    (GED) classes
    3.
    English Literacy/Civics/Citizenship Preparation Classes (EL/Civics)
    4. ESL classes offered through the
academic side of Austin Community College
    5.
College classes for credit at ACC or another college.

  • The GED classes lead to a GED certificate. They are free.
  • EL/Civics classes help students improve their English language skills and learn about the U.S. systems of government, banking, education, immigration, and healthcare.
  • ESL classes offered through the academic side of Austin Community College are not for credit, are not free, and are intended to help people prepare for college credit classes.
  • College credit classes lead to a certificate in an area of vocational study (for example: car repair, radiology, upholstery) or a degree (2-year or 4-year).
  • A person who has a GED or high school diploma may begin studying in developmental studies or college credit classes at ACC. A person who wishes to do this and who is from a country where the native language is not English usually must take and pass the TOEFL exam.
