Welcome New President – Elect:

Barbara announced that Max Landry won the vote for President – Elect and welcomed him.

Jim Burgess:

Jim first thanked the ACCCEA for inviting him then he spoke about retirement.  Jim first explained to everyone that he thinks of each person as a snowflake, each one is unique, meaning everyone’s financial situation, life goals, etc are different, therefore no one should choose a retirement plan just because someone they know chose “that” retirement plan.  Jim asked the members three questions to help make people think a bit, these questions were:  “How many people are not concerned about retirement?; How many think it is for old people?; How many know how many people there are over 100?”  Jim explained that there are 75-80 thousand people over 100 years old in the United States.  People tend to think that choosing a retirement plan is like choosing a job; they don’t realize that it is a lifetime decision!  Jim also explained that once you retire with TRS you are considered always retired.  If you choose to come back to work after retirement and work over 20 hours a week your retirement will decrease, if you work 40 hours, your retirement goes to 0.

Jim recommended four steps that people should follow 5-6 months in advance before retiring.  After following these steps then decided if retiring is the right decision for you, because if you choose to come back to work after you retire remember you will be doing the same work for half the pay and half the benefits!  First go to TRS and attend their four-hour presentation; keep in mind that you do not have to be concerned with their health plan and investment plan.  Second, go to ERS who handles ACC’s insurance and attend their four-hour briefing; again keep in mind that you are concerned with insurance, dental and long-term care.  Third, go to Social Security, attend their four-hour briefing and keep in mind that while you are there that the most complicated issues Social Security deals with are from the educational field, therefore tell them what YOU are there for.  And the fourth step is if you have or had a spouse in the armed forces you will want to attend the briefing from VA, even if you are divorced from your spouse.

Jim also suggests that everyone have a retirement debriefing at least every 5 years!

Social security; everything is constantly changing; Jim suggested that every 2 to 3 years you look into your plan to see what is happening.

Four months before the date of your retirement Human Resources will give you a debriefing and packet with applications and pamphlets.  It is also recommended that every 2 to 3 years you update your beneficiary form.

Early Retirement Option:

The ACC early retirement option is separate from the TRS program, just because you choose ACC’s early retirement option is does not mean you have to select TRS as well.  You have to be at least 55 years of age and have at least 10 years on the staffing table.  Note that once you have 5 years of service you are in TRS for the rest of your life, if you have 10 years of uninterrupted service with ACC then ACC will pay for your health insurance for the rest of your life.  This is the first time that ACC has offered an early retirement option.  Prof tech and Classified early retirement program will pay you 50% of your FY 2001 salary if you work until August 31st.  You will then be paid a lump sum check on September 3rd 2001.  Employees have until December 20th to make decision and have until January 31st to make withdrawal.

New Business:

Judy Doyen presented Jim Burgess with a classified t-shirt to show the appreciation of the ACCCEA for his attending the meeting.

There was a drawing for Christmas presents; Marvie Vazquez, Max Landry, Tracy Miller-Thomason, Tina Webb, Jill Taylor and Jackie Mauldin all received gifts.

Jackie Pool took a minute to explain that she would be giving the reps of each campus deduction forms for those who want to donate through payroll to the emergency fund.  Barbara also noted that anything helps from a one-dollar donation to a five-dollar donation.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:59 PM.

Tracy Miller-Thomason, ACCCEA Secretary
