AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION

Tuesday, April 10, 2001 - HBC room 201, Noon – 1:00 PM

The meeting was called to order at 12:00 PM.

Welcome:  Barbara took a few moments to welcome the classified employees and our guest, Jerry Staton.

Committee reports:  Judy Green reported on Human Resources Task Force; paychecks have changed and will start being distributed in the beginning of April and are supposed to be easier to read.  Judy also reported that job request for new positions are being tracked down.  She also explained that new employees will fill out a survey at the new employee orientation and then will also be given another survey to fill out 30 days later to verify that employees are getting the training that they need.

Mark Goodrich announced that the Taskforce committee got canceled.

Judy Doyen reported on the Academic Affairs Council that a delegation from China would be visiting ACC on April 16th at various campuses.  The delegation chose only two community colleges in the nation to visit.  They are sponsored by the Ford Foundation.

Approve minutes:  Kerry Landfield motioned for the minutes to be approved.  Jenease Friske seconded the motion.  The minutes were approved.

Board meeting update:  Barbara took a few moments to review with the Association what she presented to the Board at the Board Meeting on April 2nd.  She spoke to the board about the custodians and the memo regarding outsourcing the custodians (bring in new people that are on contract).  She explained that we do not want to lose the current custodians as we all like and love them, that they are an asset to the college and not only help staff but also go out of their way to help the students.  She explained to the Association that the administration thinks that outsourcing would be cheaper, so at the Board meeting Barbara explained that it might be cheaper to outsource but that it may not provide as good of a service as we currently have.

Self-Defense Presentation - Jerry Staton:  Jerry Staton has been with the APD for 25 years, he spent 12 years on the street in radio car, 8 years on swat team and 3 years in training.

Jerry took some time to explain what an attacker looks for in a victim:

#1 – hairstyle.  If a person has long hair or a ponytail this makes for a good handle for the attacker to grab onto.

#2 – Distracted.  If you are on a cell phone or looking through your purse, you are not aware of your surroundings and this makes it easy for the attacker to approach you.

#3 – Clothing.  If you are wearing clothing that looks easily removable.

Jerry also explained that time of the day is not a real issue and that many attacks take place in grocery store parking lots, office parking lots/garages, and areas where there is a lack of people.

Jerry also explained that if attacked you can do four things: fight, flight, faint or freeze.  He then took some time to explain the reactions and each of these may cause.

There are several forms of defense.  Jerry suggested that you first learn how to use your hands, feet, elbows, and knees, as they are good forms of defense.  Then he discussed firearms, weapons, OC sprays and electronic devices.

New/old business:  Food is now available at the Eastview campus.

Judy Doyen announced that Kathy Judge a classified employee is published in the new Rio Review and will be honored at the Journal Reception at 4:00 PM at RGC on Thursday, April 26th.  Reading of the works will be at RGC from 1-3 PM as part of the Fine Arts Festival.

The meeting adjourned at 1:02 PM.

Respectfully submitted by:

Tracy Miller-Thomason, ACCCEA Secretary
