AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION

Tuesday, May 8, 2001 - HBC room 201, Noon – 1:00 PM

The meeting was called to order at 12:00 PM.

Welcome:  Barbara took a few moments to welcome the classified employees and asked all the officers and representatives to stand and introduce themselves.  Those officers and representatives in attendance along with Barbara were; Al Kaiser, Judy Green, Tracy Thomason, Jackie Pool, Kerry Landfield, and Mark Goodrich.

Barbara then asked that all new attendees please stand and introduce themselves.  New attendees were; Tanya Riddick from Human Resources, William Simmons from painting, Oscar Medina from maintenance, and Efrain Sandoval from maintenance.

Approve minutes:  One error was found in the April 10th minutes.  Al Kaiser moved that the minutes be approved with the correction of the error.  Tomi Welch and Judy Green both seconded the motion and Kerry Landfield made the third motion.  The minutes were approved.

Updates:  Barbara gave an update as to what was discussed at the officers meeting with Dr. Fonte on April 25th.  She explained that they discussed scheduling briefly and that she was told that it would be online come Spring 2002 and that it is to be a web-based program.

Barbara also explained that she talked to Dr. Fonte about the course schedules being delivered to the students before the campuses.  She was told that this was a one-time error and that normally this is not the case.  This time one of the trucks delivering the schedules made an error and took the schedules to the post office before bringing them to the warehouse.  She was told that this would not be the case in the future.

Barbara also talked of how Margie Shelnutt had suggested an idea of a mentor program for classified employees.  Barbara spoke with Gerry Tucker about this at the meeting with Dr. Fonte.  If someone wants to volunteer to be a mentor to a new employee a list will be created and given to Gerry Tucker.  Employees will be rotated so not one employee is continuously a mentor.  (A sign up sheet was passed around during the 5-8-01 meeting for people to sign up.  If others would like to sign up, please send Barbara an email.)

The ACCCEA budget was also discussed with Dr. Fonte.  The Classified Association has requested money for a food budget so that the school can provide lunch for some of the ACCCEA meetings.

It was also questioned as to why the original plan to have Technical Office Assistant II replace Administrative Assistant III upon the Administrative Assistant leaving their position was not being done.  It was explained to Barbara that this is a decision actually up to the supervisor of the position.  If the supervisor wishes to change the Administrative Assistant III position to a Technical Office Assistant II position they may do so once the Administrative Assistant III is vacant.

Benches for non-smokers at HBC will be installed however; the question is where to put them?  It was decided that the benches would be put in the shade by the new facility area.

Special Presentations - Dr. Fonte:  Dr. Fonte took a few moments to present a President’s Volunteer Certificate to those employees of ACC who not only do their daily job but also volunteer in the community on a regular basis.  Those that were recognized for their extra efforts were:  Marvelia Vasquez, Kathryn Watts-Martinez, Ural Wade, Patricia Holmes, Bonnie Ruppert, Melanie Barnes-Plant, Tomi Welch, Linda Thomas and Karoline Gebert.

Professional Development Day:  Susan Hamende the new Senior Coordinator for Staff Development introduced herself and thanked everyone for being patient with her these last 7 weeks that she has been with ACC.  She has been working on the Professional Development Day and wanted to first make sure everyone was aware of date change from May 16 to May 18.  Susan took a few moments to explain some of the topics that would be held: Personal Safety and Self Defense, The 21st Century Workplace: Essentials of Working as a Team, You work Hard For Your Money – Make It Work Hard For You, Building a “Work”able Wardrobe: Not for Women Only, Developing Resilience: Balancing Work and Family, Career Check-up: Is Your Career on Track?

She also informed the association that there would be a continental breakfast from 8:00 – 8:30 AM and that Dr. Lillian Davis would be the Guest Speaker at the Luncheon that would be from Noon – 1:45 PM.  This event, if you attend all three Sessions and the luncheon, will earn you 5.0 professional development hours.

Election:  Elections will be coming up soon.  If you know someone who would like to serve now is the time to discuss this with them and get ready to nominate them…Positions that will be available are President Elect, Secretary and Parliamentarian.  Also remember that you do receive a stipend for your work.

Committee reports:  Tomi Welch reported on the Southern Association of Colleges (SACS), that in 2003 we will get accreditation. ACC must follow their book and guidelines and prove we are following those guidelines.  For more information you can view the website at: www2.austin.cc.tx.us/sacs or you may call Karoline Gebert at 223-7091.

Judy Green reported that the HR Task Force has not met since she lasted reported on it.  She also reported that the SACS Environmental Scans Committee would be doing surveys regarding courses, technology and students.  She also noted that the Administrative Council hasn’t met recently either.

Kerry Landfield reported that it has been decided that the entrance / exit off of Metric into the back of the Northridge campus will now be posted as a No Left Turn exit.

At June’s meeting we will discuss annual benefits.

Jackie Poole announced that she has talked to Stephanie Diina and that Stephanie is trying to get someone to act as a signature authority for the emergency fund while she in on vacation in June.

Mark Goodrich thanked everyone for voting for him, and also for not running against him!  He also stated that he attended the Board meeting on May 7th and said hello and that he again wanted to thank everyone and let them know that he will do his best in his new position.

George Sweeney inquired if it was true that the Board has decided to take away the two-week break and Christmas and the one-week Spring Break?  Kerry Landfield along with others stated that no, that is just a rumor as far as we know.

The meeting adjourned at 12:50 PM.

Tracy Miller-Thomason, ACCCEA Secretary
