AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION

Tuesday, September 12, 2000, HBC room 103.7 Noon – 1:00 PM

The meeting was called to order at 12:05 PM.

Kerry Landfield moved to accept the minutes from the August 8, 2000 meeting.  Max Landry seconded the motion.

Judy Doyen took a few minutes to recognize the “old people, outgoing people” of the ACCCEA.  Judy first recognized Rebecca D’Amico who regretfully has resigned from ACC and was not able to attend the meeting.  Rebecca did have a few words that she wanted Judy to relay to everyone for her; “For future elections when electing a new president she would like us to think of electing a diplomat president.”  Judy also thanked Rebecca for everything she has done for the ACCCEA.

Also recognized was:  Barbara Dickey, Al Kaiser, Shawna Berry, Sonia Stewart, Donna Pitts, and Millie Marquis.  Judy thanked them for all the hard work they contributed this past year.  She also made note that Donna Pitts is the outgoing Secretary but will remain the ACCCEA Webmaster.

Judy also took a moment to recognize the new people:  Max Landry, Judy Green, Margie Shelnutt, Tracy Miller-Thomason, George Sweeny, and Matlida Morales.

As the first order of business Judy presented Max Landry with an ACCCEA T-shirt for volunteering to be the roaming representative between the campuses.

Judy then presented books to the following outgoing ACCCEA people:  Jeannie Beach, Mark Goodrich, Melanie Barnes-Plant, Tomi Welch, Jackie Pool, and Donna Pitts.  Judy also presented Barbara Dickey with “How to Make People Say Yes”, as she is the out-going President Elect.

Barbara presented Judy with “Chicken Soup for the Unsinkable Soul”.  Judy then took a moment to show everyone her teardrop trophy and the plaque that was presented to her at the previous meeting.

At 12:20 Barbara officially took over the meeting.  She first announced that the ACCCEA would now have a donation can for food and beverages, if everyone could occasionally contribute the money would be used for refreshments for the upcoming meetings.  Barbara also stated that the ACCCEA brochures have been completed and that she has them in her office and Human Resources also has them if anyone knows of someone who may need or want one.

Jackie Pool gave an update about the emergency fund.  The guidelines have been started and emailed over to Stephanie Diina and Gerry Tucker.  The faculty association also has done the same thing so there will now be 3 organizations using the SECC Emergency Fund.  She also found out that while only we could use the SECC campaign, 11% of what we donate will be taken out for administrative purposes.  Stephanie Diina has stressed that if you send your donation directly to her that 100% of the donation will be put into the emergency fund.  Long-term medical care and emergency housing will not be covered.  Also hourly employees will not be included in the Classified fund.

Judy Green presented everyone with the draft of the Employee Performance Review and the Employee Evaluation of Supervisor forms that are under review for use in the upcoming evaluations.  The Evaluation of Supervisor forms were made to feel less intimidating in regards to the wording.  The supervisor is not to see the evaluations you do on them; however, if you are still worried about your supervisor knowing that you filled out the evaluation perhaps you can type it instead of writing it, or have someone else write in your answers.  These evaluations are to be done once a year.  Each supervisor should sit down with individuals at the beginning of the year to discuss goals, which should be completed, that relate to the job by the end of the year.  The question was asked “who will actually fill out the Employee Performance Evaluations if the supervisor is located elsewhere?  Many people would feel it more beneficial to have someone they work with on a day to day basis fill out their evaluation.”  Judy stated that she would write that down and look into it.  If you have any questions you may contact Vicki West at vwest@austin.cc.tx.us.

Judy Doyen spoke about Social Security.  She went to the TRS (Teachers Retirement System) seminar an obtained more information.  She discussed with those at the meeting the different options that are available including the different balloons to choose from.  She stated that she has already sent out information once but if you are in need of the information she has it and will get it to you.

Barbara introduced Dr. Allie who presented Judy Doyen with a plaque that was to be presented to her at the General Assembly for all of her hard work for the Classified Association.

Barbara announced what committees were going to need volunteers.  Those committees include:  Parking Appeals Committee, Campus Police Task Force, Facilities Task Force, Student Services Council and Student Retention Committee.  Barbara will get with Donna to have this information put on the web page.

Barbara also noted that Matilda Morales was not able to attend the meeting as she was at a funeral and that Barbara sent her an email on ACCCEA’s behalf to wish her best wishes.

Barbara also discussed her talk to the board.  Barbara stated that she read a newspaper article about NCR regarding 3 issues regarding working: clean environment, good wages and good hours.  We can’t do anything about the wages; the hours have been set by the union before us yet we can do something about the environment.  Barbara suggested that if we had clean campuses that people might be happier to go to work.  She suggested that perhaps if we established some type of group that went to the campuses to help clean occasionally that not only would this allow people to interact with each other, see the other campuses, but it also might build morale throughout the college.

Barbara also stated that the next officers meeting with Dr. Fonte is scheduled for the 21st of September.

The meeting adjourned at 1:04 PM.

Respectfully submitted by:

Tracy Miller-Thomason, ACCCEA Secretary
