Value Statement
The Austin Community College District (“ACC” or “the College”) provides a Sick Leave Pool to assist employees who may experience an unexpected and catastrophic family crisis that requires an employee’s absence from the workplace.
Administrative Rule
Staffing table employees are eligible to receive hours from the Sick Leave Pool when all of their available leave (sick, vacation, personal) and compensatory time has been exhausted and they are not eligible for paid leave from any other source. Employees may donate accumulated vacation or sick leave for potential use in emergency situations by other employees whose leave has been exhausted.
Definitions
1. Catastrophic injury or illness is a severe condition or combination of conditions affecting the mental or physical health of the employee, the employee's immediate family or an individual residing in the employee’s home that requires the services of a licensed practitioner for an extended period of time and that forces the employee to exhaust all leave time earned by that employee.
2. Licensed practitioner means a practitioner, as defined in the Texas Insurance Code, who is practicing within the scope of their license.
3. Immediate family is defined as those individuals related by kinship, adoption, marriage, or foster children who are so certified by the Texas Department of Human Services who are living in the same household or if not in the same household are totally dependent upon the employee for personal care or services on a continuing basis.
4. A Sick Leave Pool Committee comprised of a representative from the classified, professional-technical and full-time faculty employees appointed by the association shall be responsible for reviewing a request for Sick Leave Pool hours and making a recommendation to Human Resources.
Responsibilities
1. The employee is responsible for submitting the Request for Sick Leave Pool hours to the Office of Human Resources, Benefits Section, prior to exhausting their accrued leave.
2. The Office of Human Resources, Benefits Section, is responsible for processing the request and securing a determination.
3. The Sick Leave Pool Committee shall review the request and make a recommendation to the Vice President of Human Resources.
4. The Office of Human Resources, Benefits Section, shall notify the employee and supervisor of the decision regarding the Request for Sick Leave Pool hours.
5. The Office of Human Resources, Benefits Section, shall ensure that the employee’s approved time is counted in the College’s time reporting system.
6. The immediate supervisor shall ensure that an eligible employee is advised of the program.
7. The immediate supervisor shall ensure that, upon approval, the employee’s time is accurately reported.
