Objectives:  |

Using
critical thinking and the nursing process, the student will:
-
Apply the facts, principles and concepts related to urethral catheterization, irrigation and removal.
- State
the purposes of catheterization and irrigation.
- Identify
the type of client who might need to be catheterized.
- Differentiate
between the nursing care and indications for each of the following types of catheterization:
- straight
- intermittent
- indwelling
- clean intermittent
- Discuss
the relationship of catheterizations and some causes of infection.
- Explain
the proper procedure for discontinuing an indwelling foley.
- Satisfactorily
complete a urethral catheterization according to discussed guidelines.
- Discuss
the procedure for continuous bladder irrigation including calculation of urinary output.
- Verbalize
the nursing actions related to the maintenance of a suprapubic catheter.
