Urethral Catheterization & Irrigation

 
Module Objectives:

Using critical thinking and the nursing process, the student will:

  1. Apply the facts, principles and concepts related to urethral catheterization, irrigation and removal.
  2. State the purposes of catheterization and irrigation.
  3. Identify the type of client who might need to be catheterized.
  4. Differentiate between the nursing care and indications for each of the following types of catheterization:
    • straight
    • intermittent
    • indwelling
    • clean intermittent
  5. Discuss the relationship of catheterizations and some causes of infection.
  6. Explain the proper procedure for discontinuing an indwelling foley.
  7. Satisfactorily complete a urethral catheterization according to discussed guidelines.
  8. Discuss the procedure for continuous bladder irrigation including calculation of urinary output.
  9. Verbalize the nursing actions related to the maintenance of a suprapubic catheter.
