Mike McCarthy’s ACC career began in 1986 when he enrolled
at Austin Community College to complete some general education
courses before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin.
Intending to be a school teacher, Mike studied mathematics with
ACC faculty he now counts as friends and colleagues. Eventually,
Mike transferred to UT, completing a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics
Education in 1990, a Master of Science in Mathematics at Texas
State in 1993, and the Ph.D. in Mathematics Education at UT in
1999. When he completed the Master’s degree, Mike returned
to ACC as an adjunct faculty member to teach college level and
developmental mathematics. Also, Mike went to work at Southwestern
University at Georgetown, TX, eventually becoming an Associate
Professor of Mathematics and Director of Institutional Research.
Mike also worked as Director of Institutional Research and Assessment
at Huston-Tillotson University for a time. In 2005, Mike returned
to ACC to teach a course for faculty that were displaced in the
SACS re-accreditation and has taught at ACC each semester since.
