Creative Writing Department Overview
One of the most active small departments in
the college, the Creative Writing Department offers sophomore–level classes in writing poetry,
fiction, creative nonfiction, plays, screenplays, and works for children,
all contributing to an associate of arts degree in creative writing.
Students can also receive this degree online, one of the few in the country.
Along with courses, students have abundant opportunities to work together in
a writing community through monthly student open mics, the Writer’s Guild
(ACC’s creative writing club), and The Rio Review (ACC’s student edited
journal). The department is home to The Balcones Center for Creative
Writing, which houses a collection of poetry books and journals for
student use, and which sponsors the national $1000 Balcones Prize in Poetry. In
addition, the department sponsors 2–5 readings per year featuring writers
with state and national reputations. Please visit the department’s web site
for more information, including course descriptions, degree plans, a
gallery of faculty and student gatherings, and an index of The Rio Review.
