English For Speakers of Other Languages Department Overview
The Department of
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) offers nonnative speakers of English
the opportunity to improve their English language skills in three areas, reading
and vocabulary, writing and grammar, and oral communication. Students can enroll
in our courses either as college credit or as continuing education courses. We offer
specialized courses in accent reduction and research writing. In the spring the
ESOL Department sponsors an International Night where students can mingle and
share their cultures.
The ESOL Department also offers ESOL classes for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. These classes are conducted through American Sign Language and meet at Riverside Campus in a classroom equipped with the most up–to–date technology. Students established a very active Deaf Studies Association (DSA), which has won many awards. Every spring, the DSA sponsors a play written, directed, and performed by students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Please visit the department’s web site for more information, including course descriptions, degree plans, faculty and student information.
