INFO GAME

"The Info Game"

What is it?

A four-part interactive web tutorial covering the following "information literacy" topics:

How Do Students Use it?

Any computer at ACC can access all of it. Access from off-campus is possible, although a process to get a password is required for portions of it. It takes 45-90 minutes to complete.

How Do Faculty Know Students Did It?

There are four short quizzes. Upon completion, students can print out a page with their name entered. Students must send the results of their quizzes to the instructor. The testing is not punitive; it is more of a sel-assessment.

What Do Students Do with the Information?

You will be given an assignment that requires research, stressing the use of a variety of sources (for example, one periodical article, one business database, one web site).

The Info Game is a project designed to increase your understanding of electronic information sources and their importance in doing research in business and throughout your life.

1.    You must get an email account and have access to the World Wide Web

ACC does not provide either home Internet connections or email accounts to ACC students. However there are many places to access the web on campus and there are free email services. If you want Internet access from home you will need to contract with an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Free email accounts

If you don't already have an email account, you will need to obtain a free web-based one. These let you send and receive email from any computer with access to the web.

Where can I check my email on campus?

If you have a web email account, you can access it on any computer that has access to the web. On campus, this includes the Computer Center and Library, as well as some computer labs.

NOTE:

How do I choose a free email service?

There are over 1000 companies offering free web-based email. The Library does not recommend any particular service. If you would like to shop around, here are a couple of extensive listings of free email providers on the web.

Don't Know How to Access a Web Site?

First, open a "Browser" (Netscape or Internet Explorer).

Type in http://library.austincc.edu/research/guides/infogame/start.htm in the Location or Address Box near the top of the screen.

Need help?  The librarians or staff in the Computer Centers can assist you.

How can free email be free?

Most free email providers make their money by showing you advertisements, small text messages that appear at the end of your email messages or even advertiser messages that are sent directly to your email box. So don't be surprised if you get emails thing to sale you things. Also, you need to remember that the web changes very quickly, and some providers disappear from one day to the next.

Email Assignment

Your instructor will give you an assignment that will show that you have gotten an email account and used it. Be sure you know your instructor's email address:  Instructor's email address:  applegat@austincc.edu
