COSC 1315 Fundamentals of Programming

Schedule and Requirements

Summer 2008

Revised 06/18/08 ~

The official web page for this course is http://www.austincc.edu/baldwin/Summer08/Cosc1315WebPage/COSC1315.htm

Overall requirements

You will have the opportunity to submit four written exams in this course.  Your grade will be based on the best three out of the four exams.  Therefore, you must submit a minimum of three written exams according to the scheduled deadlines given below.

You will have an opportunity to submit 22 laboratory assignments in this course.  You must successfully complete and submit ten laboratory assignments to get full credit for the laboratory assignments.

Each of the three written exam will count as 25-percent of your final grade.  The group of ten laboratory assignments will count as the remaining 25-percent of your final grade.

Exam schedule

You may complete and submit the exams early if you wish.  However, you may not submit the exams late.  You can complete and submit an exam during any of my scheduled office hours or during any lab period up to and including the deadline date.

The deadlines for submission of the exams are:

You must complete and submit the first exam not later than 9:00 pm, Thursday June 19, 2008.  This exam is based on Lecture Notes #105, 106, 107, and 108.

You must complete and submit the second exam not later than 9:00 pm, Thursday July 3, 2008.  (July 3 is not an ACC holiday.)  This exam is based on Lecture Notes #110, 120, 130, and 140.

You must complete and submit the third exam not later than 9:00 pm, Thursday July 17, 2008.  This exam is based on Lecture Notes #150 and 160.

You must complete and submit the fourth exam not later than 9:00 pm, Thursday July 24, 2008.  However, if you are satisfied with your grade based on the first three exams, you are not required to submit the fourth exam.  This exam is based on Lecture Notes #170, 180, 184, 190, and 200.

The word "submit" means received by and physically in the hands of the instructor.  Submit early. Don't procrastinate and let a last minute problem (such as a flat tire) cause you to miss a deadline.

Because you will have the exams available to complete and submit during most of the semester, there will be no grace period and no makeup possibility.  Barring a genuine emergency (such as an extended stay in the hospital) failure to submit an exam by the deadline will result in a maximum allowable score on the exam of zero.

Lab assignment schedule

The first four lab assignments must be submitted not later than 9:00 pm on Thursday, June 19, 2008. Deadline extended to 9:00 pm on Tuesday, June 24, 2008.
The next three lab assignments must be submitted not later than 9:00 pm on Thursday, July 10, 2008.
The last three lab assignments must be submitted not later than 9:00 pm on Thursday, July 24, 2008

Selecting ten lab assignments from the 22 that are available

You must choose the program that you will write for each assignment from either Column A or Column B below.

Assignment A B
1 Asg01 Asg02
2 Asg03 Asg04
3 Asg05 Asg06
4 Asg07 Asg08
5 Asg09 Asg10
6 Asg11 Asg12
7 Asg13 Asg14
8 Asg15 Asg16
9 Asg17 Asg18
10 Asg19 or Asg21 Asg20 or Asg22

If you submit a program from one column to satisfy a given assignment and you fail to receive credit for that program, you may try again by submitting a program from the other column that is designated for the same assignment.  However, you will only have one opportunity to submit each program and it will be scored acceptable or unacceptable.  You must satisfy all assignments by the deadlines given above.  There is no grace period and no makeup possibility for missing an assignment deadline.

To avoid losing credit for an assignment due to a log jam on the deadline date, submit your assignments on a regular basis.  Don't wait and submit a large number of assignments on the deadline date.  If I am unable to score your assignment before the deadline has expired and you fail to get credit for the assignment, you won't get an opportunity to submit the program from the other column for makeup credit.

If you submit a program from one column to satisfy a given assignment and you receive credit for that program, you may not get credit for the program in the other column designated for the same assignment.

Schedule of Topics to be Covered:  The following list of topics shows the topics that will be covered in the classroom lectures for this course.  These topics were taken directly from the ACC Master Syllabus for COSC 1315(In some cases the topics were paraphrased relative to the Master Syllabus and were rearranged into more easily manageable units.)

During a standard sixteen-week semester, the above topics will be covered at a rate of approximately one topic per week.  During a short semester, the schedule will be compressed to cover more than one topic per week as appropriate.  For example, in a nine-week summer session, the topics will be covered at a rate of approximately two topics per week.
