Specialized Interpreting/Transliterating

   

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will focus on interpreting/transliterating settings with special populations (deaf/blind, MLS, etc) and special settings (theatrical, medical, legal, mental health, etc).  Students will be expected to complete one project outside of class.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

A)    Vocabulary Development

1.   The student will be exposed to vocabulary through class work, guest speakers, and videos.

2.   Given a set of targeted vocabulary items drawn from class items and videos, the student will demonstrate comprehensive mastery of vocabulary items.

B)     Presentation/Performance Skills

1.   The student will perform a signed song.

2.   The student will demonstrate and present to the class on the topic of their choice (with Instructor approval).

3.   The student will be exposed to short narratives, stories and songs by fellow students, guest speakers, videos and instructor(s) for the purpose of vocabulary building and retention.

C)     Transliterating Skill Development

1.   The student will be expected to know the difference between Interpreting and Transliterating.

2.   Transliteration skill and performance will be the focus of this class.

Student Responsibilities:

A student in this course agrees to:

·         Attend class regularly. Attendance is mandatory unless otherwise excused by   instructor.

·         Be on time.

·         Participate fully in class activities.

·         Complete all class assignments on or before the due date.

·         Type all written assignments.

·         Take quizzes, mid-term and final examinations on announced dates.  

·          Refrain from using your voice or interpreting for other student(s) who may not understand the instructor or guest speakers. If you are having a hard time understanding, raise your hand and ask for clarification.

Grade Conversion Table:          1000 – 900 points = Final grade “A”

                                                899 – 800 points = Final grade “B”

1.         Class Attendance and Participation: (100 points)

a.   You may have one absence without penalty– any absences beyond the one will result in twenty-five (25) points being deducted from your attendance/participation grade per class missed. 

b.   You may have three tardies or early departures of not more than 15 minutes – any tardies or early departures beyond 15 minutes or beyond three will result in fifteen (15) points being deducted from your attendance/participation grade per incident. 

c.   The instructor will withdraw any student who is absent three consecutive classes. This equates to 8 hours of instruction and would put you too far behind if you miss more than this.

d.   Please inform me if you have an exceptional circumstance that causes you to miss class. 

All students will be encouraged to participate in class discussions and activities on a regular basis.

If you own a pager or cell phone, please turn it off during class. 

 

2.      Research Project (200 points) Topic is to be selected by student with approval from instructor.  Topics must be different from the rest of the class. An oral presentation as well as written presentation will be given in class to share your findings with your classmates


A complete bibliography is required for all papers.  You must use at least FOUR different references (books, articles, and electronic media).  Your references should be cited appropriately.  All papers must be at least 1000 words (not including the bibliography and title page).

 

Suggested research topics and more detailed information regarding research paper will be      
        discussed in class.

 

3.     Midterm (200 points) – The midterm will cover all material presented to that point of the class.  It will include information discussed in class and information given to you by the instructor and guest speakers.  There will be no make-up of the midterm. Your midterm may be taken AHEAD of schedule but not after the date given in class.

 

4.     Final (200 points) - There will be two parts, written and expressive (both sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign) Cumulative in nature; the receptive part will include comprehension and production, information from the videotapes shown in and out of class, class assignments and discussions.  There will be no make-up of the final without prior approval from me.

 

5.    Quizzes (150 points) – There will be four quizzes given during the semester. They will not be announced prior to the day of the quiz. They are each worth 25 points and will range from vocabulary to what was presented in class either by the instructor or a guest speaker. Another incentive to always be in class!

 

6.    Signed Song Performance (150 points) - The student will be required to perform an interpreted song.

Withdrawal Policy

You will be withdrawn if you miss 3 consecutive classes. Refer to the student handbook page 24 for the withdraw policy under other circumstances.  If you have a very unique or extreme situation, please discuss it with me.

Incompletes

Incompletes will be given only under very unique or extreme circumstances.
