Building Construction Technology program overview

The Building Construction Technology program provides learning opportunities for students in the following areas:

1. Hands-on instruction in concrete, masonry, woodworking, carpentry, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical fields.
   
2. Practical skills including blueprint reading, cost estimating, and construction scheduling.
   
3. Applied skills including managing projects:  time, material, and processes.
   Each class consists of math, interpreting symbols, measuring, construction language, and solving problems common in construction processes.
   
4. Soft skills learned in CNBT 2342 Construction Management I, CNBT 2344 Construction Management II and CNBT 2346 Construction Management  III will prepare managers to coordinate their efforts with others for consistency and continuity. Students learn to avoid and resolve conflicts common in a construction project.

Several of the hands-on lab classes build on each other. Although not required to be taken in any particular order, a student can learn how to

1. frame a small instructional model house (floor plan - PDF) in the CRPT 1415 Conventional Wall Systems class
2. add the roof, windows and doors and a variety of exterior finishes in the CRPT 1441 Conventional Exterior Finish Systems class
3. install the electrical wiring, plumbing and HVAC in the CNBT 1402 Mechanical Plumbing and Electrical class. (This class gives potential assistant superintendents hands-on experience and an understanding of those trades. Students need additional training beyond what is offered in Building Construction Technology to be licensed in these trades)
   
4. finish the interior by adding sheet rock, taping, floating and texturing it, then installing flooring in the CRPT 1445 Conventional Interior Finish Systems class
5. build and install cabinets in the WDWK 2451 Cabinet Making II class.
6. learn how to manage a construction project through Construction Management I, II and III (CNBT 2342 CNBT 2344 CNBT 2346)

Building Construction Technology  is located in Building C of the Riverside campus and Building 5000 of the Round Rock campus.
