Students solder copper tubing to connect a compressor (the outside unit in a residence) to a furnace/air handler (the inside unit), then test their work for leaks. They wire the electrical connections and see if the inside air handler heats and cools the area.

The instructor describes the components of the compressor (typically located outside)

Then students learn how to cut copper tubing ...

...and practice soldering...

...two different-sized pieces of copper together.

Students remove the extension from the filter dryers (blue cylinders) ...
...and solder two copper lines to the compressor (the outside unit).
Students also solder the two copper lines to the air handler (the inside unit), completing the connection between the two parts of the system.

To learn if the soldering was successful (no leaks), students do a pressure test with nitrogen (a harmless gas).
Once the pressure test is successful, the instructor demonstrates how to pull a vacuum (using the silver vacuum pump) and add freon (green cylinder)

Students wire the compressor for electricity...
as well as the furnace and air handler (inside unit)...

...and the thermostat.
After a successful test of the air conditioning, students focus on the other part of the system - the ducting.
They begin by measuring and cutting a section of duct board...

...closing and stapling it.
And then both groups add tape....
....to fully seal the duct board.
