WDWK 2405 Intermediate Woodworking

The second course in a sequence of courses that allows students to refine skills required to build quality furniture.

In this class students learn additional techniques in the woodworking area. It is the second course in a sequence of courses that allows students to refine skills required to build quality furniture. Students get hands-on experience with dovetail joinery. The table drawers are made using dovetails to attach the front of the drawers to the sides of the drawers.

Students provide their own hardwood. This way they gain experience in choosing and buying hardwood and they can control the appearance of the finished product (different woods and stains can give a wide variety of finishes, as the photos of finished tables show). Expect to spend $50-$200 for hardwood

depending on the type of wood.

Hardwood costs vary depending on the wood. The table uses about 24 board feet of wood. Approximate board foot cost of various hardwood:

• Poplar - approximately $2.00 per board foot
• Alder - approximately $3.00 per board foot
• Walnut - approximately $6.75 per board foot

Tools students must provide: photos (each instructor has a specific list; see his/her syllabus)

• Eyewear, hearing protection,
• Closed toe and appropriate work clothing. NO sandals or flip flops. 
• Engineering square - purchase from Woodcraft
• Tape measure, 12 ft.
• Pencils, NO mechanical pencils or pens
• 1/2 or 3/4" blue painters tape  available at Home Depot, Lowes and other hardware stores
• Nail apron
• Set of Woodworking Chisels or a single 1/2 chisel. Irwin (Marples) set or 4 is $35.00 at Home Depot, Lowes
• Hardwood of your choice -
• Squares, dovetail saw - discussed in class
• binder for handouts
