RELATED POLICY QUESTIONS ON ENDS/MISSION/PURPOSE
[1] "Ends" as defined by John Carver's policy-governance model
What external difference in the world will be produced?
For whom? At what cost and with what priorities? [This is the
set of questions that the draft College Ends policy is intended
to address at the most general level. The "community-priorities
plan" for non-breakeven programs, which the Board would review
and adopt annually as part of the strategic-planning process,
would give more detail.]
[2] Mission - ACC's part of the job of producing the desired ends
What types of activities shall the College undertake?
[This question is directly addressed by current policy A-1,
Mission of the College, which lists the legal mandate of the College
and the activities we intend for the College to undertake in response
to it. The Board also deals with it in the approval of specific
programs. In policy-governance terms, such activities are means
rather than ends.]
[3] Purpose - the motivation for creating and maintaining ACC
Why is the community putting resources into this
activity? What are the values which implementation methods should
respect, and against which the mission components should be weighed?
[The central statement of values by the Board is current policy
A-2, Statement of Values and Ideals. Some of these are repeated
and amplified in other policies, such as D-1, Statement of Instructional
Philosophy.]
