Special Meeting - Board of Trustees
January 19, 1999

 

In accordance with the terms and provisions of the Texas Open Meetings Act, Chapter 551 of the Texas Government Code, the Board of Trustees of Austin Community College convened in public session on Tuesday, January 19, 1999, at 7:45 p.m. in the Phoenix Ballroom of the DoubleTree Hotel located at 6505 I-35 North, Austin, Texas, with the following members present: Beverly Watts Davis, Chair/Presiding Officer; Allen Kaplan, Vice Chair; Lillian Davis; Della May Moore; Carol Nasworthy; Rafael Quintanilla; Beverly Silas; and John Worley. Hunter Ellinger, Secretary, was absent.

It is further found and determined that in accordance with the policies and orders of this Board, the notice of this meeting has been posted and return thereof made pursuant to the terms and provisions of the Texas Open Meetings Act, Chapter 551 of the Texas Government Code, and there has been full compliance with the terms and provisions of said act, including the timely posting of the subjects of this meeting.

Dinner with Elected Officials and Discussion

Beverly Watts Davis, Chair/Presiding Officer, welcomed and introduced the following elected officials and Austin Community College staff to discuss community needs with the Board of Trustees: Janet Bartles, Member, Cedar Park City Council; George Denney, Mayor, City of Cedar Park; Charles Eaton, Mayor, City of Leander; Gus Garcia, Member, Austin City Council; Jackie Goodman, Member, Austin City Council; Leigh Sebastian, Aide to Texas State Representative Sherri Greenberg; Beverly Griffith, Member, Austin City Council, and husband, Bailey Griffith; Willie Lewis, Member, Austin City Council; Pat Whiteside, Member, Austin ISD School Board; Richard Fonte, College President; Ana M. "Cha" Guzman, ACC Executive Vice President for Administration, Institutional Advancement and Community Relations; Steve Kinslow, ACC Executive Vice President for Campus Operations, Student Affairs, and School Relations; W. Lee Hisle, ACC Interim Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs; Gerry Tucker, ACC Associate Vice President for Human Resources; Tyra Duncan-Hall, Provost, ACC Central Austin Campuses; Brian Donnelly, ACC Intern; Also in attendance was Angela Shah, Reporter for the Austin American-Statesman.

Ms. Davis called upon Gus Garcia, a member of the Founding Board of Trustees for Austin Community College. Mr. Garcia provided a historical review of the founding and accomplishments of ACC and his expectations for the future of the College.

Ms. Davis provided comments regarding the new Eastview Campus and introduced Austin Community College President Richard Fonte. Dr. Fonte stated it is the desire of Austin Community College to continue adjusting and meeting the needs of the community. He solicited comments from participants concerning the current focus of the College, other constituencies on which ACC should focus, and how the institution should evolve. He stressed the importance of gathering this information from elected officials in order to be responsive to the total community.

Councilman Gus Garcia stated the community needs to fund the College more than five cents and stated he anticipates community support for a tax increase.

Dr. Guzman discussed information provided to participants including materials given to constituencies regarding the College, Adjunct Faculty Fair, the recently organized Citizens' Advisory Committee, Spring enrollment figures, courses offered at the new Eastview Campus, the College's commitment to adult education, Historically Underutilized Business vendors, summary of ACC's employee population, and maps of the service area and taxing district. She solicited assistance in attracting additional qualified adjunct faculty.

Participants discussed the materials and provided the following comments:

Board members and Dr. Fonte expressed appreciation to Beverly Griffith, member of the Capital Metro Board, for her assistance in addressing and securing shuttle service between the three Central Austin campuses.

Ms. Davis expressed appreciation to participants for their attendance and the suggestions provided to assist Austin Community College in future endeavors to meet the needs of the community. She stated ACC will move forward assertively to ensure accessibility to all students.
