Briefing
Session - Board of Trustees
In
accordance with the terms and provisions of the Texas Open Meetings Act, Chapter
551 of Texas Government Code, the Board of Trustees of the Austin Community
College District convened in public session on Monday, October 7, 2002, at 5:53
p.m. in Room 502 of the Highland Business Center of Austin Community College
located at 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin, Texas,
with the following members present: Rafael Quintanilla/Presiding Officer;
Barbara Mink, Vice Chair; Allen Kaplan, Board Secretary; Lillian J. Davis;
Beverly Silas, and John Worley.
It is
further found and determined that in accordance with the policies and orders of
this Board, the notice of this meeting has been posted and return thereof made
pursuant to the terms and provisions of the Texas Open Meetings Act, Chapter
551 of the Texas Government Code, and there has been full compliance with the
terms and provisions of said act, including the timely posting of the subjects
of this meeting.
Chair
Quintanilla provided a summary of the sessions and the information presented
during the Annual Meeting of the Association of Community College Trustees held
in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, October 17-21, 2002, including: a session for new presidents; venue of Board
meetings; agenda should reflect what Board members want to talk about; ethics;
theme of the day—servants; abstaining; Roberts Rules of Order; discussion on
policy governance; strategic planning; marketing; and media.
Trustee
Lillian Davis attended a Datatel session and a
presentation by competitor. She also
attended presentations on: who is on the
team and what kind of things are covered; trio grants;
culture of the college to pass a bond election; fundraising; and planning for
the next generation.
Trustee
Beverly Silas attended a Senate meeting and a presentation regarding board
retreats—professional development of the Board.
She advised that Trustees are being heard and information is being
presented at workshops. She stated that
Trustees need to be involved in the Board of the Association of Community
College Trustees. Currently, there is
only one representative from
Linda
Young, Governmental Relations and Special Assistant to the President, attended a
session regarding funding an election; campaign for tax and bond elections; and
FiberLounge which is available for use from Datatel.

Having
no motion before the Board, the October 7, 2002, Briefing Session of the Austin
Community College Board of Trustees was adjourned at
