1st Public Hearing – Board of Trustees

August 28, 2008

 

In accordance with the terms and provisions of the Texas Open Meetings Act, Chapter 551 of Texas Government Code, the Board of Trustees of the Austin Community College District convened in public session on Thursday August 28, 2008, at 11:55 a.m. in the Board Room (201) of the Highland Business Center of Austin Community College located at 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin, Texas, with the following members present:  Ms. Veronica Rivera, Vice Chair/Presiding Officer; Mr. Raul Alvarez [arrived at 12:00 noon]; Mr. John-Michael Cortez;  Mr. Allen H. Kaplan; Dr. Barbara P. Mink; and Mr. Jeffrey Richard [arrived at 12:05 p.m.].  Trustees Nan McRaven, Board Chair, and James W. McGuffee, Board Secretary, and Tim Mahoney were absent from the meeting.

 

It is further found and determined that in accordance with the policies and orders of this Board, the notice of this meeting has been posted and return thereof made pursuant to the terms and provisions of the Texas Open Meetings Act, Chapter 551 of the Texas Government Code, and there has been full compliance with the terms and provisions of said act, including the timely posting of the subjects of this meeting.

1st Public Hearing on Proposed 2008 (FY2009) Tax Rate for Austin Community College

Board Vice Chair Veronica Rivera introduced the item and opened the 1st Public Hearing on the Proposed 2008 (FY2009) Tax Rate. 

 

Mr. Ben Ferrell, Vice President for Business Services, distributed information and stated that this was the 1st of two public hearings on the Board of Trustees’ proposal to set the 2008 Tax Rate for Austin Community College at $0.0954 ($0.0900 for Maintenance and Operations and $0.0054 for Debt Service).  Mr. Ferrell announced that the 2nd Public Hearing would be held on September 2, 2008, at 6 p.m., at the Highland Business Center, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin, Texas.  He stated that the Board of Trustees was scheduled to vote on the 2008 (FY2009) Tax Rate at a public meeting to be held at 11:45 a.m. on September 8, 2008, at the Highland Business Center, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin, Texas.

 

The following individuals spoke at the Public Hearing:

·        Ms. Marilyn Snipes

·        Ms. Mary Solanick

 

Dr. Stephen B. Kinslow, College President; Mr. Ben Ferrell; and Mr. Neil Vickers, Associate Vice President for Finance and Budget, responded to questions from Trustees and provided information regarding the proposed tax rate and exemptions.

Adjournment

Having no motion before the Board, the August 28, 2008, Public Hearing/Special Meeting of the Austin Community College Board of Trustees was adjourned at 12:15 p.m.
