MINUTES – Board of Trustees

Forum with ACC Legislative Delegation

October 20, 2008

 

 

In accordance with the terms and provisions of the Texas Open Meetings Act, Chapter 551 of Texas Government Code, the Board of Trustees of the Austin Community College District convened in public session on Monday, October 20, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room (201) of the Highland Business Center of Austin Community College located at 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin, Texas, with the following members present: Ms. Nan McRaven, Chair/Presiding Officer; Ms. Veronica Rivera, Board Vice Chair; Board Secretary; Mr. Raul Alvarez; Mr. John-Michael Cortez; Mr. Allen H. Kaplan; Mr. Tim Mahoney; and Mr. Jeffrey Richard.  Trustee Barbara P. Mink was absent from the meeting.

 

Others present were:  The Honorable Elliott Nashitat, State Representative; Mr. Joe Morris, aide to Senator Jeff Wentworth; Mr. Nate Walker, aide to Representative Eddie Rodriguez; Ms. Edna Butts, aide to Senator Kirk Watson; and Ms. Melissa Rosser, aide to Representative Dawnna Dukes; Dr. Stephen B. Kinslow, ACC President/CEO; Mr. Ben Ferrell, ACC Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration; Mr. Mike Midgley, ACC Vice President for Workforce Education and Business Development; Dr. Kathleen Christensen, ACC Vice President for Student Support and Success; and Ms. Linda Young, ACC Special Assistant to the President for External Affairs.

 

It is further found and determined that in accordance with the policies and orders of this Board, the notice of this meeting has been posted and return thereof made pursuant to the terms and provisions of the Texas Open Meetings Act, Chapter 551 of the Texas Government Code, and th-re has been full compliance with the terms and provisions of said act, including the timely posting of the subjects of this meeting. 

 

DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION

Board Community Forum with Legislative Delegation

Chair Nan McRaven welcomed participants to the Forum.  Trustees and  legislators/

representatives were introduced.  Chair McRaven stated the discussion would concern the higher education legislative agenda for the 81st Texas Legislature.  She provided a program overview. 

 

Dr. Stephen B. Kinslow discussed legislative priorities of the Texas Association of Community Colleges (TACC) representing the State’s 50 community colleges, and some items specific to the Austin Community College District (ACC).

 

Board Vice Chair Veronica Rivera and Trustee Allen H. Kaplan provided information regarding the National Legislative Caucus and the Community College Association of Texas.

 

Chair McRaven expressed appreciation for the attendance and participation of the legislative staff and stated that ACC would look forward to working with them during the upcoming legislative session.

Adjournment

Having no motion before the Board, the October 20, 2008, Forum of the Austin Community College District Board of Trustees was adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
