Sam Taylor was born and raised in Taylor, Texas. He attended Kilgore Junior College studying Electrical Engineering for two semesters before deciding that Ben Franklin could keep the electricity, and enrolled at the University of Texas for a few semesters studying Architectural Engineering. He then accepted a job at Tracor (Austin) in the military products division. Later he accepted a job in geological mapping. In 1973, Sam began work for a civil engineering office in Austin. His next job was with Westinghouse Industrial Motor Division in Round Rock for three years, and then he returned to a civil engineering position. In 1987, when the Texas economy crashed, he moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida doing highway design. By 1990, the Texas economy had picked up again, and he was able to move back to Texas and resume his civil work.
In 2005 he received an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Engineering Design Graphics-Interdisciplinary Specialization from ACC.
Sam’s hobbies include hot rods and sailing. His current project is a 1937 Chevy coupe, which was his first car at age 14 and was his dad’s first new car. He sails his 22’ Catalina on Lake Travis to relieve stress. Any extra time is spent as a Shrine Clown raising money for Shrine Children’s Hospitals. Sam have two grown kids, three grown step-kids, seven grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. All of which keeps him pretty occupied.
Sam has taught drafting courses at ACC since 1984 (except for the five year period spent in Florida). Sam enjoys teaching more than any field he has worked in and tries to make his class as fun for his students as it is for him to teach.
