Prerequisite:
DFTG 1405 and DFTG 1417
  A study of structural systems including concrete foundations and frames, wood framing and trusses, and structural steel framing systems. Includes detailing of concrete, wood, and steel to meet industry standards including the American Institute of Steel Construction and The American Concrete Institute.

DFTG 1405 TECHNICAL DRAFTING (4-3-3) top
Prerequisite: None
  Introduction to the principles of drafting to include terminology and fundamentals, including size and shape descriptions, projection methods, geometric construction, sections, auxiliary views, and reproduction processes. Instructs students in modern graphics and modeling fundamentals for engineering design. Students will be introduced to freehand sketching, multi-view orthographic projection, shape modeling and its applications in computer-aided drafting and design (CADD). Studies will include graphic geometry and projection techniques, visualization methods, pictorial drawings, geometric modeling techniques for CADD, drafting practices, and manufacturing processes and materials documentation.

  Topics will cover the principles and practices used in residential construction. This course is an introduction to the preparation of architectural construction documents for a single family residence.

DFTG 1421 ARCHITECTURAL ILLUSTRATION (4-3-3) top
Prerequisite:
DFTG 1417
  Architectural drawing and sketching, including freehand drawing, perspectives, delineation in various media and development of students' graphical expression, including an introduction to various reproduction methods. Visual communication is a drawing studio intended to help the student visualize his/her creative thought process and the environment around him/her. The class is structured to advance the student's visualization skills of architectural subjects by developing hand-drawn perspectives and presentation techniques. Basics of three dimensional CAD modeling are also covered.

DFTG 1433 MECHANICAL DRAFTING (4-3-3)

Prerequisite:
DFTG 1405 and DFTG 2419 or Instructor approval. May be taken concurrently with DFTG 2419.
  An intermediate course covering detail drawings with proper dimensioning and tolerances, use of sectioning techniques, common fasteners, and 3D isometric and oblique drawings, including bill of materials. This is an advanced course in modern graphic drawing and design. Topics covered include dimensioning techniques, drafting standards, pictorial drawings, auxiliary views, sections, fasteners, assembly and detail drawings. The engineering design process is also covered.

DFTG 1458 ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC DRAFTING (4-3-3)

Prerequisite:
DFTG 1405. May be taken concurrently with DFTG 2419.
  A study of the principles of layout of electrical and electronic drawings, stressing modern representation used for block diagrams, schematic diagrams, logic diagrams, wiring/assembly drawings, printed circuit board layouts, motor control diagrams, power distribution diagrams, and electrical one-line diagrams. An introduction to schematics, logic diagrams and electro/mechanical design. Study of electronic symbols and the use of industrial standards.

  This course focuses on advanced ProE foundation techniques and Pro/Surface module. Modeling solid and surface features as well as advanced modeling techniques that provide more flexibility in the design process will be studied.

Advanced students only. Students must attend orientation.
  Architectural and Engineering Computer Aided Design's capstone course. Particular attention is given to the development of a portfolio suitable for job hunting in the Architectural and Engineering CAD field. May be repeated to meet the requirements of an Architectural and Engineering CAD internship.

  This course focuses on the creation and assembly of construction drawings for a custom residence including interpreting building regulations, building codes and creating specifications to support the construction document.

  This course covers civil engineering drafting principles and applications using a dynamic model based approach. Topics include: exchanging civil design data, surface modeling and analysis, site development, grading, road design, subdivision land planning, utility design and production drafting.

Corequisite:
DFTG 2471
  This course is designed to build on the knowledge accumulated in IC I and IC II. The nature of the topics to be covered requires student use of state-of-the-art design and verification tools and the technical support for those tools. For this reason, the class will be held in an industrial setting where the tools and the technical support already exist. The class will be fast paced and it will cover complex topics in depth. Some programming knowledge will be helpful.

DFTG 1495 SPECIAL TOPICS: MICRO-ELECTRO/MECHANICAL SYSTEMS (4-3-3)

DFTG 1433 strongly recommended
  Micro Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) are physical structures with dimensions in the micron range built using layers of poly silicon and sacrificial silicon dioxide. The designs are created using leading edge technology and design tools. The student will be introduced to MEMS through the use of AutoCAD as a base with extensions to support 2D and 3D modeling, layer cross section views and a design rule verification capability similar to the tools available in the integrated circuit design world.

DFTG 1495 SPECIAL TOPICS: ADVANCED SOLID MODELING - SOLIDWORKS (4-3-3)

DFTG 1433 strongly recommended
  This course builds upon the outcomes and concepts presented in DFTG 1433 and focuses on advanced solid modeling techniques utilizing Solid Works parametric CAD software. Students will use Solid Works software to create solid geometry for individual machine parts, create assemblies from the individual parts and then produce engineering working drawings from the solid models.

DFTG 2402 MACHINE DRAFTING (4-3-3)

Prerequisite:
DFTG 1405 and DFTG 1433
  Production of detail and assembly drawings of machines, threads, gears, cams, tolerances and limit dimensioning, surface finishes, and precision drawings. This course is a study of machine design dimensioning and tolerancing (including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing) using ASME/ANSI and ISO standards. Also, an introduction to producing part drawings from parametric solid models is provided.

DFTG 2412 TECHNICAL ILLUSTRATION (4-3-3)

  Pictorial drawing including isometrics, obliques, perspectives, charts, and graphs. Emphasis on rendering and using different media. Introduction to design, problem solving and team building. Students will learn basic sketching and techniques, the creation of solid models and rendering. The students will design and create 3D animations and design a cover for a conference program.

  A continuation of practices and techniques used in basic computer-aided drafting emphasizing advanced dimensioning techniques, the development and use of prototype drawings, construction of pictorial drawings, construction of three-dimensional drawings, interfacing 2D and 3D environments and extracting data.

Prerequisite:
DFTG 2419 and DFTG 1417
  Architectural drafting procedures, practices, and symbols including the preparation of detailed working drawings for a commercial building, with emphasis on commercial construction methods. This course emphasizes accuracy of details and knowledge of building materials. Each student will prepare a set of construction documents for a commercial structure. The course will be operated in the same manner as a typical architectural firm.

Prerequisite:
DFTG 2419
  Exploration of the use of system customization for drawing production enhancement and the principles of data manipulation. Presentation of advanced applications, such as three-dimensional object creation and linking graphic entities to external nongraphic data. This course builds on the skills achieved in earlier Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) courses. The student exploits advanced and customizable features of the CAD software to build an efficient, integrated, customized CAD environment. The course explores in more detail several advanced concepts aimed at increasing drawing efficiency, including linking with external drawings and documents, creating, editing, and maintaining libraries of drawing components, and creating dimension styles and viewpoints. The student also gains exposure to the customizable features of the CAD software, including linetypes, hatch patterns, scripts, slide shows, macros, shapes, and an integrated custom menu system. The course concludes with a brief introduction to the programming environment accessible from the CAD software to help the student decide whether to continue on into the CAD Programming course.

DFTG 2436 CAD PROGRAMMING (4-3-3)

DFTG 2432.
  Use of programming language to enhance CAD software. This course builds on the topics discussed in the Advanced Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) course (DFTG 2432). The student investigates several programming environments accessible from the CAD software to continue in the creation of a customized CAD environment. Various programming principles are introduced via AutoLISP and the Visual LISP Integrated Development Environment (IDE), including basic math and geometric functions, requesting user input, data typing and type conversions, string and list manipulation, conditional expressions, loops, selection sets, entity and symbol table manipulation, and text file input/output. The student progresses through the creation of dialog interfaces using the CAD Programmable Dialog Box facility, ActiveX automation, and the Visual Basic for Application (VBA) environment.

DFTG 2470 INTEGRATED CIRCUIT LAYOUT AND DESIGN I (4-3-3)

DFTG 2419, DFTG 1458, or Instructor approval. May be taken concurrently with CETT 1409. CETT 1425 recommended.
  This is an introductory course in the design of integrated circuitry and the I.C. designer's role in industry. Students will study I.C. design theory and employ specialized CADD software to plan chips and create "cells."

  An introductory course that demonstrates the integration of Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided-Manufacturing (CAM). This is a study of modern prototyping and machining methods, teaching the use of specific software for converting 2D and 3D CAD drawing geometry directly into toolpath information used to drive numerically controlled turning and milling machines.
