General Description

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists with conducting research regarding operations of TRS, other retirement systems and government agencies; and with preparing abstracts and summaries of research.
  • Reviews and analyzes TRS policies, procedures, forms and processes and recommends changes to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Compiles, analyzes and evaluates program, member and other TRS related data and prepares complex reports using a computer with database, spreadsheet and word processing software.
  • Assists with researching, writing, editing, graphic design, photography, video, social media and performing layout design for newsletters, brochures, handbooks, reports and other print materials used to inform and educate TRS employees, members and the general public.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining procedure manuals.
  • Reviews forms, correspondence, reports and other documents for completeness and acceptability.
  • Responds to routine inquiries from TRS staff, members, school districts and other interested parties regarding program requirements and associated TRS laws, rules, policies, procedures and systems.
  • Assists in monitoring ongoing computer operations, and alerts appropriate staff of inefficiencies or problems that may need corrective action. 
  • Assists in performing routine maintenance and in resolving routine machine, printer and software problems, such as cleaning equipment, mounting/dismounting tapes, replacing printer toner, fixing paper jams and re-prioritizing production jobs.
  • Provides general office administrative support, including, but not limited to, typing or word processing correspondence and other documents; greeting and routing visitors and telephone callers, sorting and distributing incoming and outgoing mail; copying; and faxing.
  • Enters data into spreadsheets, databases and other automated applications.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining record-keeping and filing systems.
  • Assists in completing special projects and performs other work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience 

Applicant must be currently enrolled in and actively attending an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university, or have just completed the previous semester; and must have completed a minimum of 30 college credits by the start of the internship [Applicant will be required to submit a copy of college transcripts].

  • Position level will be determined by the level of education attained as of the start of the internship, as follows:
  • Student Intern 1:  Completion of 30 – 89 semester hours.
  • Student Intern 2:  Completion of 90 or more semester hours, but has not attained a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Student Intern 3:  Completion of Bachelor’s degree and accepted for or currently enrolled in a graduate degree program.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of at least 60 semester hours, including coursework related to the specific program area of the internship assignment.  Skill in using Microsoft Office software.

General Description

The Security Officer I performs entry level or routine security work under the direction of the Manager of Staff Services.  Work involves providing a safe and secure environment for employees, members and visitors of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas by patrolling buildings and adjacent TRS property on a regular basis and by staffing the security control room and monitoring associated equipment.  Works under close supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment within established procedures.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides security for TRS employees, members, visitors and property, including:
  • Guarding against unauthorized personnel entering TRS property.
  • Guarding property against theft, fire and vandalism.
  • Providing security coverage to parking lots and parking garage as needed.
  • Escorting employees, members and visitors to their vehicles as needed.
  • Monitoring whereabouts and actions of service/trade/cleaning personnel after business hours.
  • Assuming responsibility for operations of the security control room as needed.
  • Monitoring, operating, and responding to the computerized alarm system.
  • Assists with monitoring the TRS physical plant and associated equipment, including:
  • Monitoring HVAC equipment and contacting appropriate personnel as needed, following established guidelines/procedures.
  • Complying with energy conservation practices after business hours.
  • Remaining alert for and making timely reports on safety hazards, including watching for leaks, spills, and other potential problems and unusual occurrences; and correcting safety and mechanical hazards when possible.
  • Notifies proper authorities and evacuates buildings in case of fire or other emergencies.
  • Completes daily reports as required.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience 

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • One year full-time security experience.

OTHER SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Knowledge of security systems, practices and procedures.
  • Skill in exercising sound judgment and initiative, including reacting quickly and calmly in emergency situations, and in working without immediate supervision. 
  • Skill in using a computer in a Windows environment with word processing and other business applications.
  • Skill in providing quality customer service.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication and in relating to people in a professional and pleasant manner, exercising tact and diplomacy at all times.
  • Skill in writing clear, concise and legible reports.
  • Ability to remain alert at all times and to stand or walk for extended periods of time under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with co-workers, agency staff, contractors and visitors, and to work in a professional team environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with HVAC equipment and computerized alarm system. 
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid.
