Jill Patterson Workshop

Jill Patterson, founder and editor-in-chief of The Iron Horse Literary Journal and associate professor of creative writing at Texas Tech University, presents a student literary journal workshop. This hands-on workshop is a great opportunity for current student editors, along with those interested in journal editing and publishing, to gain insights into putting together a successful literary journal. Creative Controversy Workshop

Creative Controversy: The Classroom as a Space for Voicing and Cultivating Identity Our moral values are part of our identities. The classroom can be a space where students voice and also cultivate their identities in discussion of controversial moral issues such as abortion and the death penalty. This session will explore techniques the instructor can use to encourage students to voice their values as part of friendly, mutually-beneficial discourse through which all students bring intellect to bear in further cultivating their own value systems. Discussion led by Ellen Briggs Stansell adjunct faculty Philosophy department.

The Flea Circus

ACC’s Center for Public Policy and Political Studies co-sponsors “Austin in the 1950’s: The Political and Literary Landscapes of Billy Lee Brammer.” The event will feature the premier of “The Flea Circus,” a short film based on Billy Lee Brammer’s classic novel of Texas politics, The Gay Place. Following the film, ACC professor and Austin Chronicle columnist Joe O’Connell will host a panel discussion featuring Austin literary and political luminaries Gary Cartwright, Nadine Eckhart, Don Graham, Kay Northcott, Jan Reid, and A.R. “Babe Schwartz. “The Flea Circus” was written and directed by ACC Drama Department Chair Shelby Brammer, and edited and produced by ACC creative writing faculty member, Sidney Brammer.

Sun Set Student Choreographer Series

ACC Dance students showcase their work. Jaime Nesvadba choreographed a contemporary ballet with harp accompaniment. Atticus Rodriguez choreographed IntroExpressionism. Melissa Watt choreographed “Talking to Myself” a solo dance work. Lyrical solo performed by Bonnie Cox.

The Work of Philip Randolph Fagan: “Philip’s Shadow” and other Short Films

Philips Randolph Fagan a 2008 grant recipient of the Texas Filmmakers Production Fund presents “The Work of Philip Randolph Fagan: Philip’s Shadow” Philip Randolph Fagan’s namesake and uncle, Philip Norman Fagan, was an enigmatic adventurer, actor and dancer who led one of the most interesting adventure-filled lives. He was the intimate companion to Andy Warhol and good friends with the likes of beatnik icons William Burroughs and Brion Gysin. Director’s Discussion follows the screening.

In 2 the West

Based on the Austin 1980s classic “Into the West” which made it all the way to the Kennedy Center, “In 2 the West” updates and expands the voices of contemporary Texans, featuring monologues developed in ACC creative writing and drama classes. Working with Austin writers, actors, and directors, ACC students and faculty once again illustrate the collaborative possibilities that exist within Austin creative culture. Directed by Amparo Garcia Crow and Sidney Brammer both are adjunct faculty in the Creative Writing Department. Coproduced by the ACC Drama and Creative Writing Departments.
