VoCAT = Vocational , Communication, Academics and Technology
VoCAT is a unique Continuing Education college experience for special needs adults whose disabilities may prevent them from particpation in traditional adult education programs. VoCAT is open to all adults, regardless of age or functioning level. Our specialized curriculum enables us to offer this opprotunity to every student that seeks admission.
The college experience is much more than going to class. It is entering the adult world, becoming independant and being your own person. VoCAT students participate in adult education to involve them in the Austin, TX community with vital and unique connections with peers and employers.
All classes are held at Austin Community College Highland Business Campus in Austin, TX.

Fall and Spring semesters are each 16 weeks matching the ACC class schedule. The summer term is 10 weeks usually starting in June and ending mid-August. Students receive up to 96 hours per 16 week session or up to 60 hours per 10 week summer session.

DEVR 8001 Literacy Skills
Every job includes core academic skills. Instruction is designed on an individual basis. Instruction is planned to build vocational and independent living skills in reading and writing. Individual group instruction reinforces both academic skills and teamwork for task completion. Computer assisted instruction fees are included in course activities.
In the beginning of each semester, each student's literacy level is assessed to determine their strengths and challenges. We work closely with families, case managers and other student supporters to ensure the student is maximizing their learning experience.
DEVR 8001 Math Skills
Math skills enhance everyday life and are imperative on the job as well as in school and at home. Instruction is planned to build vocational and independent living skills. In vocational math skills we work in groups as well as individually to build confidence in using math in everyday situations. Computer assisted instruction fees are included in the course activities.
COMG 8001 Vocational Clerical Skills
This course focuses on the basic skills that an individual will need to get and keep a job. During the admissions interview a core job-specific skill area is identified. Workplace skills are included in the instructional plan; such as how to ask for and get help in the workplace; maintain attention to complete a task; or more advanced skills such as telephone etiquette, resume writing, cover letters, as well as administrative skills such as typing, filing and customer service. Opportunities to attend into other ACC classes are explored.
POFT 8001 Vocational Technology Skills
This course covers basic computer use. The use of specialized software and the use of adaptive hardware is included. Vocational technology use includes keyboard skills, data entry, basic business software applications, email and internet use. Specific application software skills are selected during the admission interview.

Applications for admission are available on this website at the bottom of the welcome page, or by calling our number at (512) 223-7515. Print, sign and mail. If an agency will be funding your student, please have your case manager sign the application before mailing the application.
To be admitted into VoCAT;
- Complete and send in the VoCAT application
- Come to the admissions interview
- Meet the staff and complete the paperwork at the interview
- Confirm payment through your funder or arrange payment with ACC
