Austin Community College is the only place in Texas where you can earn a specialized two-year degree to prepare you for one of today's most exhilarating, high-demand careers: Utility Lineworker.
New recruits are needed immediately throughout Central Texas, so ACC partnered with area utility providers to develop an exclusive Associate of Applied Science degree in Utility Lineworker Technology. The work is often physically extreme and mentally demanding, but each day is a new adventure. Plus, the jobs are secure, the pay is impressive, and the benefits are unsurpassed.
What's a Lineworker?
Lineworkers (also known as distribution electricians) are the men and women who work high atop utility poles to keep our electricity flowing. They restore power during outages, operate heavy equipment like bucket trucks and cranes, as well as install overhead and underground power lines, transformers, and streetlights. Lineworkers will play a critical role in the modernization of the electric grid and in the implementation of smart grid components.
Where can I work?
Based on demand for applicants with lineworker-focused associate degrees, ACC partnered directly with the following utilities to create this program: Austin Energy, Pedernales Electric Cooperative, the Lower Colorado River Authority, Georgetown Utility Systems, Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative, and the city of San Marcos. Many of these utilities offer internships for students, which can lead directly to full-time positions. Your training not only will qualify you to be a lineworker for electric utilities nationwide, but it can prepare you to do a variety of jobs in the electric utility industry.
How much will I earn?
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, area utility lineworkers earn on average $20.23 per hour or $42,080 per year, not including overtime.
