Translating Documents to Braille

 

I. Scanning Documents (Hewlett Packard Scanner)

A.     Go to My Computer and double click

B.     Scroll to the bottom of the screen and double click on scanner.

C.     In Windows box click on Microsoft Document Imagery

D.     In next prompt window, for multiple pages being manually scanned, select prompt for Additional Pages

E.      Put document or book on scanner.

F.      Click scanning box in right top corner

G.     When through scanning, put next page on scanner and click on continue.

H.     When finished with scanning document, click on done.

I.        Now the process of saving document begins

II. Saving document

A.     Go to file

B.     Select Text to word

C.     In box select all pages.

D.     This will bring up the whole word document.

E.      Save to disc

F.      Clean conversion errors on saved document and save again.

G.     Note:  any little (a), (b), (c), or (d) letters (used within outlines, questions, etc.) in the document need to be capitalized because the brailler will read them as words.

H.     The document is now ready for the brailler.

III. Duxbury Program and Paragon Brailing Printer

A.     Put disc with document in computer with the Duxbury Program

B.     Go and click on programs

C.     Scroll to Duxbury and click on DBT win.

D.     Open word document in the top left hand corner.

E.      Then go to file and scroll down and click on translate (The document is displayed on the screen in Braille.  You can scroll up and down the translation and the words will be highlighted in yellow to check translation.)

F.      The Paragon Printer turn on button is on the back of printer where the cord comes into the printer.

G.     Then push the two black buttons on each side of the front of the printer and lift to open.

H.     You will see the feeder and on the right lower corner programming buttons.

I.        To load paper, open up the black clamps on each side of the printer, put the paper under silver leader on the left side and clamp holes of paper on both sides evenly.

J.       To line up paper in the printer, press buttons on lower right-hand corner.  First press the buttons OL, then 2, then E on the pad.  If the paper does not align, then push the _V__ button on the pad and OL, 2, E.

K.    Go back to translation document, and go to file and click on emboss and the document will Braille.

L.      After printing open printer, and detach document.  Be carefully in separating document.  The document should remain whole.  If perforated area is not visible to remove, push _V__ button on keypad and it will advance the paper.

M.   After printing, do not save document in Duxbury and exit the program.

 

 

Problems that may occur.

1.      Printer and computer may not be aligned with the proper number of characters per line to print.

2.      Printer – Reset to original default settings by programming on the keypad:

OL (specific key)

0.05 (make sure to key in the decimal point)

95E

1E

3. Duxbury Program – while in the program go to Global on top toolbar and click on it.  Then click on embosser.  In the box make sure the length of characters per line to print should be 42 and characters on text should be 40. (Braille character text lines settings should always be lower than the printer character settings.)
