Task and purpose:  To install a windows 2003 server, make the server into a domain controller, install active directory, and lastly connect a windows xp client to the windows 2003 server.

 

1.  Insert the Windows Server 2003 CD in the CD-ROM drive.

2.  Restart the computer. If prompted, press any key to boot from the CD.

3.  The Windows Server 2003 installation begins.

4.  On the Welcome to Setup screen, press Enter.

 

5.  Review and, if acceptable, agree to the license agreement by pressing F8.

 

6.  Follow the instructions to delete all existing disk partitions. Continue to delete partitions until all disk space is labeled as unpartitioned space.

 

7.  After the new partition is created, press Enter.

 

8.  Select Format the partition using the NTFS file system, and then press Enter.

 

Your computer will now reboot.

 

9.  The Windows Server 2003 Setup Wizard detects and installs devices. This can take several minutes, and during the process your screen may flicker.  

10.  In the Regional and Language Options, make changes required for your locale. Click Next.

11.  Enter Name and Organization.   Click Next.

12. Enter Product Key (usually located on back of disk cover), and then click Next.

13. In the Licensing Modes, select the appropriate licensing mode for your situation, and then click Next.

14.  Name your computer and click Next.

15. Create password. Click next.

16. Correct current date and time if necessairy. Click Next.

17. In the Networking Settings, make sure Typical Settings is selected, and then click Next.

18. In the Workgroups or Computer Domain (No is selected by default), click Next.

19. The Windows Server 2003 Installation continues and configures the necessary components. This may take a few minutes.

20. The server restarts and the operating system loads from the hard drive.

 

Now we want to make the Win Server 2003 system a Domain Controller.

 

How to make Windows Server 2003 into a Domain Controller:

 

1.  Click the Start button, click Run, type DCPROMO, and then click OK.

 

2.  When the Active Directory Installation Wizard appears, click Next to begin the installation

 

3.  After reviewing the Operating System Compatibility information, click Next

 

4.  Select Domain controller for a new domain (default), and then click Next.

 

5.  Select Domain in a new forest (default), and click Next.

 

6.  For Full DNS name, I entered contoso.com, click Next.

 

7.  Click Next to accept default Domain NetBIOS name of CONTOSO.

 

8.  Review file pathname for Database and Log Folders and accept.

 

9.  Leave default for Shared System Volume. Click Next.

 

10. Install and configure the DNS server on this computer. Click Next.

 

11. Permissions compatiable with Win 2000 or Server 2003. Click Next.

 

12. Create Restore Mode Password. Click Next.

 

13. Shows a summary of the Active Directory installation options. Click Next. If prompted,  

      insert Win Server 2003 CD.

 

14. Click OK when it warns you about having dynamically assigned IP addresses for DNS server.

 

15. Select the 10.0.0.0 network interface from the Choose Connection list. Click properties.

 

16. Under the connection uses the following items menu, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP),

      then click properties.

 

17. (I’m connecting my Win Server 2003 to an XP Pro station. Win Server 2003 system hosts the

      DNS server. I’m connecting these two stations using a crossover cable. That is why I do not

      need a default gateway address, and also why my Server 2003 system’s IP address is also

      the DNS IP address for both systems.) Select use the following IP address. I made up my

      own. 192.168.100.2 for IP Address. Press TAB and it will calculate your Subnet Mask for

      you. It should say 255.255.255.0. Again, you do not need a default gateway if you’re using

      a crossover cable. Click on Use the following DNS server addresses. Under Preferred DNS

      server, I used the IP address for Win Server 2003 because that is where my DNS server is

      located. So you will enter 192.168.100.2 again. Click OK. Then click close to continue.

 

18. Click Finish once the Active Directory Installation Wizard is finished.

 

19. Click Restart Now to reboot the computer.

 

 

Now, I want my Win XP Pro station to join my Contoso.com domain.

 

1.     Go to Control Panel, click on Network Connections.

 

2.     Right click LAN Connections. Make sure Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is enabled.

 

3.     Highlight TCP/IP, then click on Properties.

 

4.     Because we used 192.168.100.2 on our Win Server 2003 system. I assigned 192.168.100.3 to my XP Pro system.

 

5.     Hit TAB, the Subnet Mask so automatically determine itself.

 

6.     Under Use the following DNS server address I used the address from the Win Server 2003 system because it hosts our DNS server. So again, we enter 192.168.100.2. Click Ok. Then close.

 

7.     Now we want the XP Pro station to join the Contoso.com domain. Click on Control Panel. Click on System. Click on Computer Name tab. Click Change.

 

8.     Under Member of, click Domain and type in Contoso.com. Click OK.

 

9.     Enter your logon and password for your Win Server 2003 system. Click OK.

 

10.  You will then get a Welcome to contoso.com domain screen. Click OK. Then reboot.
