Troubleshooting a Dot Matrix Printer

By Michelle Krummen

A Dot matrix printer with a default parallel port setting of EPP (Enhanced Parallel Port) will sometimes garble the output. This setting doubles the speed of Ethernet transmission to 20Mbits/sec. which is faster than this printer can handle. EPP is typically used with Inkjet or newer printers. You may need to 'step back' with this particular printer and set the parallel port to LPT1 instead. You can easily do this by changing the setting in the BIOS. Simply reboot the computer, go into Setup /Integrated Peripherals( Integrated Devices) /Parallel Port. Once there you can Page Up/Page Down or use the Add/Subtract keys to switch to the LPT1 setting.
