Bill a student in our Computer hardware course discovered a solution to a problem that involved dual processors on his motherboard.  One processor was active and the second was a dummy.  When bill began experiencing problems:

-        the file that controls the logon window in the system 32 folder disappeared

-        The system locked him out by changing the system password

-        Several system 32 files disappeared

-        The monitor screen went out

While discussing potential solutions Bill obtained a news pc system and was in the process of removing all of the hardware from his un-working system he noted that the second new system also had a dual processor slot and both were filled – one with the actual processor and the other slot with a dummy processor.  This discovery gave him insight to the problem on his original system – he had removed the second dummy processor.  Once he restored the dummy processor to his original system along with a newly purchased processor chip, his system worked just fine.  The moral to this type of problem is to make sure you have a good inventory of mandatory required hardware to keep your system running well.
