Literary Quote

"Anyone who cannot come to terms with his life while he is alive needs one hand to ward off a little his despair over his fate... but with his other hand he can note down what he sees among the ruins. "

ENGL 1302: Analyzing Short Fiction

Class Schedule

Summer 2009: ENGL 1302 Syllabus, Syn 44470-106 (PDF)
ACC Master Syllabus ENGL 1302

Class Format & Policies

Class Format This is a distance learning course. Self-sufficiency and the ability to work independently toward goals and deadlines is essential. Utilize your texts and online resources to answer questions and conduct research. This class is writing intensive. There will be both formal and informal writing assignments every week. I expect correct grammar and mechanics on all work.

Internet Access: You must have reliable internet access. If you do not have such access at home, plan on using the computers at ACC or RRHEC daily. However, without access at home, this will be a very difficult course. You are responsible for checking your email as well as utilizing Blackboard (Bb) at least once per day. It is your responsibility to check your ACC gmail account daily. This is essential as I email students through Blackboard, so ultimately, you cannot pass this class if I cannot effectively communicate with you.

Withdrawal Policy: I will withdraw you from the class if one formal paper is late. I'm very serious about deadlines. Plan ahead.

Turning in Assignments:
All take-home exercises and writing assignments must be typewritten in MLA format and saved in either a .doc, .docx, or iWork Pages document. If you don't have a computer at home, ACC computers are available for your use. All assignments are due in my email inbox by 5pm CST on the due date. Reference this syllabus often for due dates. You will have one chance to revise a formal paper for a higher grade. If you choose to revise a formal paper for a higher grade, you must turn in the original with the revised version. I cannot grade your revised paper without your original. All papers must have at least a C prior to receiving a Departmental Exam pass. Late work is not accepted. If you turn in a formal paper late and it's past the drop date, it will result in a failing grade for the course. All weekly assignments are due by 5pm CST on Wednesdays.

***Please follow MLA guidelines for paper headings, margins, spacing, and documentation. Use Times New Roman, 12-point font and 1-inch margins. Double space your entire paper. Do not quadruple space between paragraphs.

Computer Usage: This class is computer intensive. You will be using both online resources for research as well as office applications such as Microsoft Word or iWork Pages. If you are not familiar with these tools, take some extra time to learn or take one of the free classes offered by ACC. In today's world, the ability to use a computer and the internet as tools is essential.

Incompletes: I do not give "Incompletes."

Quizzes: Quizzes over the stories and readings listed on the syllabus will be given periodically throughout the semester. I will replace two of your lowest grades with voluntary extra credit assignments. You will have two extra credit opportunities worth 100 points each to help your quiz/assignment average. Options for Extra Credit will get increasingly difficult as the semester progresses.

To get a Departmental Exam pass, you must maintain a 70% or better quiz/assignment average and receive at least a C on papers 1-5. If your final quiz/assignment average is below 70% then you must take the final exam, which is comprehensive. Once you pass the final exam and have a C on papers 1-5, you can receive a pass for the Departmental Exam.

SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY: ALL WORK IN THIS COURSE MUST BE YOUR OWN. ANYTHING COPIED FROM ANOTHER SOURCE WITHOUT PROPER MLA DOCUMENTATION AND TURNED IN AS YOUR OWN WORK CONSTITUES PLAGIARISM. I WILL FAIL YOU IF YOU PLAGIARIZE.

***I reserve the right to make changes to this syllabus and other course policies, papers and assignments. Changes will be posted on this website, so check back often.

***You must show me your proof of prerequisite before any work is accepted.***

*** You are responsible for your own learning and keeping up with your grades. All grades are posted on blackboard. You must check your email and visit blackboard between classes, as there will likely be communication from me that pertains to the following class. ***

*** You must check your ACC email daily. I communicate with you via Blackboard, so please get in the habit of checking your ACC email. ***

*** Plan on spending at least 9 hours working on assignments for this class every week. ***

*** I am available for extra help and clarification. Utilize my office hours, online office hours, and email to answer questions between classes. If you stay, I can help; if you give up and leave, I can't. **

*** I do not "give" you a grade; you EARN your grade. ***
