Spring 2008 Rio Review

Spring 2008 Publication Party Sets New Record for Donations

click for details The publication party for the Spring 2008 issue of the Rio Review enjoyed unprecedented success, crushing the record for monetary donations set by the previous semester’s staff. Beginning with a musical introduction by local band The Pajamas, the night was filled with a wide variety of poems and stories from some of ACC’s best young writers including Christina Houle, Becky Liendo, Jaime Pickett, Ryan Manning, David Powell, Kellie Salome, Susan Stockton, Mary Selph, and John Vinyard among others. ACC Literary Coffee House

Student Literary Gatherings
The ACC Creative Writing Department sponsors monthly Student Literary Gatherings where ACC students are welcome to share their poetry and creative writing in a relaxed atmosphere. The gatherings are held at Austin Java on 12th and Lamar and are open to all students and the public. Future literary gatherings will take place on:

  • September 22nd
  • October 20th
  • November 10th
  • December 1st
  • February 9th
  • March 9th
  • April 13th
  • May 4th
Featured readers will be announced closer to the dates. We hope to see you there!

Scholarship Announcement:
Creative Writing Scholarship
$500 for Spring 2009 tuition and books
Application deadline: November 15th, 2008

Criteria:

  • Overall 3.0 GPA
  • 15 hours of completed ACC coursework
  • Successfully completed English Comp. I (ENGL 1301)
  • Completed at least one ACC creative writing class

To apply, complete the Creative Writing Scholarship application (Call Mary F. Rincon at (512) 223-3355), attach a cover letter, and submit a creative writing sample (one prose piece, five to ten pages of screenplay or play, or three poems).

The cover letter is your opportunity to expand on your ambitions as a creative writer and what you hope to achieve at ACC and beyond.

Congratulations to Fall 2008 Creative Writing Scholarship winner Kellie Salome
Kellie has been writing since childhood and tried various career paths before realizing that her true passion is writing. She will use the scholarship money to continue studying creative writing and literature at Austin Community College before moving on to the University Of Texas to complete her graduate degree.


2008 Balcones Prize Winner
Congratulations to author Aimee Nezhukumatathil for winning the 2008 Balcones Prize with her volume of poetry At the Drive-in Volcano. Aimee is an associate professor of English at State University Of New York-Fredonia and has earned critical acclaim for her first book of poems, Miracle Fruit, which received the Tupelo Press Prize, the ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Award in poetry, and the Global Filipino Award. Her poetry and essays have been widely anthologized and have appeared in Prairie Schooner, Black Warrior Review, Shenandoah, Mid-American Review, and Tin House. She will be reading at Austin Community College on October 2.
