Program Description: The Austin Community College Dance Department’s mission is to foster student success and community development by offering a dance education platform including degree, certificate, and enrichment opportunities designed to meet the diverse needs of its service area. With equity and access as core values, ACC Dance provides all students an opportunity to investigate the dance field and supports them in finding their own niche therein. The program encourages students to express themselves through the technical and theoretical study, creation, performance, production, and wellness applications of dance.

ACC Dance offers an Associate of Arts Degree designed to fulfill the requirements of the freshman and sophomore year of study toward a bachelor’s degree in dance. ACC also offers a Continuing Education certificate in Somatic Movement Education, employing a dance-based approach to creative movement and wellness practices.

Experiential Learning Opportunities provide students hands-on experience in the dance field through partnerships with local and national dance organizations and companies. In this capacity, students build important relationships with future employers and educators. Every year ACC students perform, produce, teach, and engage with such organizations as American College Dance Association, National Dance Education Organization, Austin Dance Festival, Texas State University, Leap of Joy, and local school districts and private dance studios.

The Highland Campus features state of the art facilities for creative research and collaboration, artistic development, and civic engagement. During their study at ACC, dance students have the opportunity to co- create with fellow Arts and Digital Media students and to partner with such programs and disciplines as Somatic Movement Education, Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation, Peace and Conflict Studies, Global Studies, and American Studies.

Dance Majors
Please schedule an advising session with the department chair before you register for classes. The sequence of dance courses listed in the catalog is recommended based on a general progression of skill. Course sequences can be modified on a case-by-case basis to accommodate student needs in consultation with the dance department chair.

Lifelong Learning
Most of ACC’s dance courses are available to the public through the Continuing Education Department, allowing community members to take ACC dance classes with our award-winning faculty, alongside dance degree seeking students. Lifelong Learning courses boast lower course fees than those charged by most private studios. Sign up for Lifelong Learning courses here.

Non-dance majors fulfilling a core curriculum requirement
ACC Dance serves its dance majors and non-majors alike by providing courses that fulfill the Creative Arts core requirement, Language, Philosophy, and Culture core requirement, and the Component Area core requirement at multiple campuses and online, encouraging all students to interact with dance as a cultural practice and art form. No dance training is necessary for core courses.
