Austin Community College offers an Associate Degree in Dance. The program gives students an opportunity to complete the first two years of study towards a BA or a BFA, explore a career in dance, take classes for their Fine Arts elective, and become a more educated patron of the arts.
Because ACC has an “open–door” policy, all students, regardless
of previous dance training or experience, are encouraged to attend
classes. The department offers the students an opportunity to
investigate the dance field and supports them in finding their
own niche within the field. Based in a Contemporary Modern style
and recognizing each individual’s unique life experience and cultural
background, the program encourages students to express themselves
through the creation and performance of dance works. Opportunities
are also available to be a “company member” while working with professional
choreographers/instructors in the Performance Workshop class.
Experience in the dance field is also available through Service Learning opportunities. Students are given a chance to volunteer for professional dance organizations where they get first–hand experience in producing shows, marketing and publicity and administering the business side of a non-profit arts organization.
