Advanced Writing Workshop –
Prose & Poetry
PREREQUISITES:
ENGL 1301, ENGL 2307, or
instructor approval – You are expected
to drop this class if you do not have the prerequisite. You will be asked to
show proof of prerequisite.

Methodology

This
second semester writing course and we focus this semester on the genres of the
short story, poetry, and memoir. The unique elements of these genres will be
discussed in workshop format. We will be engaged in the two most important
activities for writers: reading, analysis and writing. Class periods will be
spent in: discussion, writing, reading, and occasional
lecture.

Rationale

As a
second semester writing class, editing is expected with the goal that your
writing improve as the semester progresses. Improvement
in the quantity, quality, and maturity of your writing will prepare you for
advancement in writing as a hobby, an art and a career.

The three goals of the
advanced workshop are: to correctly use the vocabulary for the elements of short
story, poetry, and memoir and to understand the portfolio system.

class.
- It is expected that you identify the appropriate form
for your prose.
Note: In any classroom
situation that includes discussion and critical thinking, there are bound to be
many differing viewpoints. These differences enhance the learning experience and
create an atmosphere where students and instructors alike will be encouraged to
think and learn. On sensitive and volatile topics, students may sometimes
disagree not only with each other but also with the instructor. It is expected
that faculty and students will respect the views of others when expressed in
classroom discussions and critiques.
