Create your own design for an exciting career
From the building you live in — to the cell phone in your pocket — everything that is built or manufactured begins with technical drawings produced by designers and drafters using computer aided design (CAD) programs. In ACC's Architectural and Engineering Computer Aided Design Program, students learn to apply programs such as AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, Creo, Cadence, MasterCAM, and Solidworks to create construction documents and technical drawings. Depending on the course of study, students may have access to CNC machining, 3D printing, and laser-cutting technology. Associate degree tracks are offered in mechanical, architectural, civil, interdisciplinary, and electronic design and drafting. If you prefer to work and attend school at the same time, our program allows you to earn employer-recognized certificates in specialized areas such as integrated circuit layout and design, building information modeling (BIM), and computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). Courses taken for a certificate will also count toward an associate degree.
Skills you will gain
Career options vary depending upon your specialization. Most CAD jobs specialize in architectural, civil, electrical, electronics, or mechanical design and drafting. Architectural drafters draw architectural and structural features of buildings for construction projects. Civil drafters prepare topographical maps used in construction and civil engineering projects, such as highways, land development, and water and waste-water projects. Electrical drafters prepare wiring diagrams that are used in the design and construction of electrical distribution systems and residential and commercial buildings. Electronics drafters produce schematic diagrams, printed circuit board designs, and integrated circuit layouts. Mechanical drafters create models and drawings that define the details for a wide variety of machinery and mechanical tools and devices. At ACC, you can explore all of these fields before deciding which one is right for you.
