General education provides a strong foundation
Austin Community College’s general Studies Program is for students who are uncertain of their career plans or would like to benefit from two years of a broad, general college education. General studies majors develop their ability to think critically and analytically, to write effectively, to work well with others, to solve problems creatively. The curriculum has been adapted to allow students to explore several subject areas. Faculty advisors can help you create a course plan designed for either university transfer or entering the workforce. Those considering transfer should always check the requirements of the transfer institution.
The skills employers say they want most in a candidate, such as communication and critical thinking, are precisely those for which general studies students are known. Liberal arts graduates work in a variety of industries, including retail trade and social assistance. And they work in a range of career fields, from management to sales to graphic arts.
