Criminal Justice

Make a career of helping, protecting, and serving other people

Join the ranks of those who serve and protect with a rewarding career in criminal justice. Austin Community College’s Criminal Justice Program prepares students to think critically and manage emergencies effectively in a host of criminal justice-related fields. Our program provides an overview of the criminal justice system and familiarizes students with law enforcement, corrections, criminal procedures, traffic law, juvenile law, and constitutional law. Students also gain skills in communication, crime prevention, report writing, criminal investigation, and forensic science applications.

The Criminal Justice Program has multiple prerequisite requirements, and all students must meet with the department chair prior to registration.

Career Information

Law enforcement, corrections, and peace officer tracks are offered. Students in the peace officer sequence program complete the equivalent of the basic peace officer training course required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement for state licensure. The correctional degree program covers juvenile procedures, probation and parole, and institutional and community-based corrections. By completing the Texas peace officer certification, along with completing the CJ-Law Enforcement degree, students will be eligible to take the state peace officer license exam. All peace officers in the state of Texas must obtain the license issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement in order to perform peace officer duties. Obtaining the license broadens the job market for students, as most police agencies require the license before accepting an application for peace officer positions.
