Geology

A path that puts your career on solid ground

A scientific study that is as fundamental as the Earth beneath our feet, geology offers a greater array of professional opportunities than you might suspect. In Austin Community College’s Geology Program, you’ll explore Earth’s structures and materials, as well as the processes that affect them over time. Courses range from physical, historical, and environmental examinations of geology to oceanography, environmental geography, and an examination of seismic activity and the impact natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanoes can have on our civilization. Upon completing the program, you will be ready to transfer to a bachelor’s degree program at a four-year institution.

Career Information

A degree path in geology can be a great avenue for those who are concerned with the Earth’s natural resources. It is also one of the more lucrative scientific fields of today. The growing role of geologists in the oil and gas industry, in addition to the need to understand and address our planet’s environmental challenges, means demand for geoscience professionals is growing. You can specialize in such fields as mineralogy, sedimentology, paleontology, stratigraphy, glacial geology, and geochemistry.
