Austin Community College has an average of 150 Deaf students enrolled each semester. In addition to interpreting services, signing tutors and a Deaf academic advisor, ACC offers many content area courses in sign language so that students can benefit from direct communication with their instructors. These courses include Transition to College, Developmental Math, Deaf ESOL Writing and Grammar, Deaf ESOL Reading and Vocabulary and Deaf ESOL ASL Grammar. The ASL Grammar and ESOL English courses encourage the development of academic ASL and meta-linguistic skills in ASL which can create a bridge to academic English learning. Because Deaf students are visual learners, a high tech visual classroom has been created specifically for the Deaf classes. ACC’s Deaf Student Association provides students with a forum to advocate for Deaf student rights, educate ACC’s hearing community about Deaf culture, plan events and gather socially.

For descriptions of the ESOL courses, please see the ESOL course descriptions page and L1 ASL Grammar page. See the schedule for these classes on the ACC ESOL schedule page. For additional information on Deaf student services see the interpreting office page and the Office for Students with Disabilities page. To learn more about the Learning Labs, visit their page.
