The Business of Biotechnology
Biotechnology companies vary greatly in their goals, but they always have a mission which drives what they research, produce, sell, or offer as a service. In order for a biotechnology company to succeed, human resources and sufficient funding must be available. Those involved in creating successful biotechnology companies must be clever in business and persistent in their pursuits. These companies must have a clearly defined vision and a wel-developed business plan to realize that vision.
For this project, you will look at the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) or founders of a biotechnology company. You will look at how this person became interested in starting or running a biotechology company. You will also look at the company's history, sources of funding, and future goals. Finally, you will examine the company's specialization in terms of research, product development, and service.
Upon completion of this project, you will turn in the following:
- a paper written from a journalist's point of view about the CEO and/or founders of the company
- a second paper written from an investor's point of view about how the company is funded and its history and future vision
- a third paper the point of view of an employee of the company about what the company does
You will be given sufficient resources to complete this project as well as step-by-step instructions.
Your instructor may have you work in groups of three where each member takes on one of the above roles.
