Neuron Malfunction

Things don’t always work as well as was suggested in the video.

Things that can go wrong include:

·         The initial synthesis and production of the neurotransmitting chemical may be inhibited, thus little neurotransmitter is available for release.

·         Certain biologically based disorders or drugs may either facilitate or inhibit the release of neurotransmitters by the presynaptic bouton.

·         Nerve cells, like good Austinites, like to recycle.  Neurotransmitters already released are reabsorbed into the presynaptic cell (a process known as re-uptake).

·         On the surface of pre- and postsynaptic cells are various types of inhibitory receptors.  These tend to act as a brake and reduce the sensitivity of the nerve cell.

·         Excessive enzymatic activity may abnormally deplete neurotransmitters.

 Pharmacological Treatment

Stimulants – facilitate the release of neurotransmitters in the presynaptic bouton.

Antidepressants – prevent the reuptake of neurotransmitters.

Antipsychotics – inhibit dopamine receptors.
