Choosing a Purpose and Patterns
Your choice of purpose and patterns will depend on your topic and the type of essay you intend to write. As you should be aware, each purpose has a particular goal and particular characteristics.
- If you want to write about a personal experience, you would likely choose the expressive purpose as your primary purpose. You would likely use the narration pattern and the description pattern to tell your personal story.
- If you want to write a fiction story, you would choose the literary purpose and likely the narration pattern and the description pattern to tell your fictional story.
- If you want to convince the reader about an idea or belief, you would likely use the persuasive purpose. Your choice of patterns would vary depending on your claim and how you intend to convince the reader.
- If you want simply to give facts about a topic, you would likely choose the referential purpose. Again, your choice of patterns would vary depending on your topic choice. Be aware that if you choose the referential purpose and you use facts from a source, you will need to document those facts using MLA citations and Works Cited entries.
As noted above, you will write your Assignment 5 essay on a topic of your choice. You also will choose your own primary purpose and two patterns to use in your essay. You will, however, have to indicate at the end of your essay the primary purpose and two patterns you have used to write your essay.
