 Course Description

This is a hands-on course for the development of skills needed to use personal computer systems for business, individual, and educational applications. In this course, you will learn the major features of Microsoft Office XP. You will be presented with an overview of the Office Suite, Windows XP, and Internet Explorer. You will learn more advanced skills for Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

 Objectives of the Course

  1. To develop knowledge of the terminology and concepts associated with microcomputers
         using the Microsoft Windows XP operating system.
     
  2. To develop personal productivity skills in the use of microcomputers for word processing (Word),
         spreadsheet analysis (Excel), database management (Access), and presentation software (PowerPoint).

 Course Requirements

  1. Preparation:   Students are expected to read assigned materials BEFORE class.
     
  2. Class Attendance:   Students are expected to attend all classes.
    A student is subject to dismissal by the instructor if the student misses 10% of the classes. 
    It is the student's responsibility to get any assignments or missed material. 
     
  3. Class Participation:   Students are expected to participate in class discussions. 
    Please feel free to ask questions when clarification is needed.   Class discussion benefits all.
     
  4. Cheating:   Copying someone else's work is not acceptable behavior.
    If the instructor determines that work has been copied, disciplinary action will result and may include referral to the College Dean.
     
  5. Assignments:   Students are expected to complete twenty two lab assignments.
     
    • Lab Hand-in assignments for each topic must be turned-in prior to taking the Exam for that topic.  
    • In general, each Lab Hand-in assignment consists of two parts:  
      1. A printout of a final work product for each tutorial section
        (regardless of whether the book instructs you to print it or not)  
      2. An Independent Challenge assignment as identified on the class schedule.  
         
  6. Examinations:   Students are expected to complete four examinations on lecture, text, and lab material.
     
    • Makeup exams for this class will be given only in the case of extreme emergencies.
      You must notify your instructor before an exam to inform him of your need for a makeup of that exam.
      If approved, your instructor will arrange for a makeup.
      Be aware, a makeup exam may be more difficult than the regularly scheduled exam.

 Withdrawal and Incompletes

  1. A "W" is given if the student initiates a withdrawal through the Admissions and Records Office
    or Deans Office, prior to the withdrawal deadline date, which is Monday, April 21, 2003. 
     
    • The instructor may withdraw a student who has not been attending class.
       
    • However, the instructor is not obligated to withdraw a student from the class.
       
    • The student may not receive a "W" after the withdrawal deadline date, but shall receive the earned grade.
       
  2. A student may receive a temporary grade of "I" (Incomplete) at the end of the semester
    only if the following conditions are satisfied: 
     
    • The student is unable to complete the course during the semester due to circumstances beyond their control.
       
    • The student must have earned at least half of the grade points needed for a "C" by the end of the semester.
       
    • The request for the grade must be made in person at the instructor's office and necessary documents completed.
       
    • To remove an "I", the student must complete the course by two weeks before the end of the following semester.
      Failure to do so will result in the grade automatically reverting to an "F".
