Exam Review for Exam 1

 

Bring scantron and #2 pencil . Questions will come from: Syllabus, Textbook Chapters 4,5,6, Man's Search for Meaning, any handouts and Lecture notes. We will test on Chapters 1-3 on the final. The exam will be multiple choice and a mix of short answer questions.

Key concepts

Main theorists associated with theory

Vocabulary words – particularly those from your student manual

Main goals of therapy

What the relationship is like between the therapist and client

Main techniques

Client's experience in therapy

Application and limitations of each model, and apply these also to multicultural counseling

Be able to contrast and compare the models

Psychoanalytic

What are the ego defense mechanisms?

What does resistance represent?

What are the stages of personality development and what happens if you get fixated at each stage?

What are the roles of the id, ego and superego?

Know the information about Jung, Erikson and object-relations theory that is in your text

 

 

Adlerian

What did Adler believe about childhood experiences?

What did Adler say about birth order?

What did he mean by family constellation and lifestyle?

What is important about Early Recollections?

What does Adler say about social interest and community feeling?

What are the 4 phases of therapy?

What groups tend to use Adlerian theories to guide their work?

 

Existentialism

What is meant by the capacity for self-awareness, freedom and responsibility, identity and relationship to others, the search for meaning, anxiety as a condition of living, and awareness of death and nonbeing?
