Great Downloads for Biology

Rasmol
Free software for looking at molecular structures. It runs on Windows or Macintosh/PPC computers. You can download hundreds of molecules for viewing in 3-D. Worth the download time.

Linear Regression

How to Use Excel to perform a linear regression. This is a powerpoint presentation. If you are running MS Internet Explorer or if you have installed the Powerpoint Plug-in,, then the presentation will play when you click on the link. Otherwise, you can save the file on your hard drive by pressing the link and following instructions. You then open the file in MS Powerpoint 97 and select slideshow.

Download the Muscle Cartoon
A cute cartoon depicting the interaction of muscle proteins during contraction

Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center

Contains movies for several molecular techniques including DNA sequencing, PCR, etc.

Protein Isolation Program
A Windows program simulating the isolation of a protein from a protein mixture. Program was written by Dr. Andrew Booth at Leeds University in the United Kingdom. This is a self-extracting zip file. When you click on the link, save the file protein.exe on your hard drive to a new folder called Protein.. To expand the file, press the START button with the left mouse button and select run. In the window, type c:\Protein\protein.exe and press OK. This will now expand the program into the Protein folder. To run the program, again use the START button, go to run and type c:\protein\protlab and press OK. (If you are using an ACC computer, you can save this all to a floppy disk. To do this, bring a 1.4 Mb floppy and replace 'c:' with 'a:'. Please ask your instructor for help if you have problems. An online version (with tutorials) can be found at http://bmbwww.leeds.ac.uk/archive/java102/ProteinLab.html.
