 Writing Process

Chapter One of your textbook explains the writing process: Brainstorming, Rough Draft Writing, Revising the Rough Draft, and Proofreading the revised Rough Draft and the Final Version. I expect you to do this approach for every essay. You must turn in work on each stage of the writing process when you turn in the Final Version of an essay. To help you with a couple of the steps, I have pages on the web site for the course. For each essay you will fill out a Rough Draft Handout. Do this after you have written your Rough Draft. If you answer all the questions, you will know which changes you need to make to the content and organization of the Rough Draft. Another page is one of the Study Skills pages. This one offers tips and a chart to do your proofreading in an organized way.

Tips on the Writing Process

 1. When Brainstorming, write down any idea that you can think of. Don't depend on your memory to remember a specific idea; write it down. Not all of them will be appropriate for the essay assignment. You will have to throw some out. But it is better to have too many ideas than not enough.

2. When writing the Rough Draft, don't concern yourself with grammar and punctuation. Instead, concentrate on the content and the organization of the paragraphs.

3. When Proofreading, look for one kind of error at a time.

Use the spell-check on the computer, but remember to check the spelling after that. Did you use the wrong word that happens to be spelled correctly? See Chapter 27, Word Power for lists of these kinds of words. You will be tested on them in the three tests of the semester as lited in your Work Schedule. Also, keep in mind that dictionary in the computer is limited. It may not have creation technological terms or certain person or place names.

The inside of the front cover of the textbook is a handy reference for the punctuating of clauses in sentences. Studying Chapters 18 through 21 will help you understand that information.

 Format

1. Type each final version with 12 point font. Use double spacing. Don't use extra spacing between the paragraphs.

2. Indent the first line of each paragraph by five spaces or one touch of the TAB key.

3. Use two spaces between end of the sentence punctuation and the first letter of the next sentence.

4. Have a separate Title Page for each essay with the Title, your name and my name.
