The minutes were approved as written.
President's Report:
Paula Robertson-Rose reported on the following items:
- The August 3, 2001 Faculty Senate meeting will probably be canceled since we are only required to have two meetings in the summer, and we will have our second one on June 29.
- Dr. Allie requested at a Board meeting that she be given time to respond to the issues that Paula brought forward in the last Senate Officers meeting.
- During the Faculty Senate allotted time at the last Board meeting, Paula showed the confusion of the forms with outdated signature authorities.
- John Worley has sent an organizational policy to the Faculty Senate that he plans to present at the next Board meeting. Dr. Fonte's organizational plan has not yet been voted on.
Report from Voucher Committee:
Frank Cronin presented the minutes of the last voucher committee meeting.
Report from Policies and Procedures Committee:
Les Albin distributed the committees recommended changes.
- AR on Single college Concept: The Senate made no changes to the committee recommendations but added a friendly amendment to allow task forces to determine the length of service for Assistant Taskforce Chairs/Campus Representatives and to omit the last sentence on item 6.
- Board Policy on College Organizational Principles: The Senate supports the committee recommendation to support the policy.
Report from Salary Committee:
The report compiled by John Cise was distributed.
Proposal on Professor Emeritus Title:
Marino Diaz-Miranda requested that this item be removed from the agenda at this time.
Math Department Hiring Issue:
Constance Elko, chair of the math department hiring committee, and the entire hiring committee presented how the hiring guidelines were being followed for the math department faculty positions.
- The committee interviewed applicants for 4 positions. They did not receive all applications that were received by the college.
- After the selection for the 4 positions was completed, the Task Force chair was informed that a second committee would need to be formed to hire for 3 additional positions.
- Some applicants did not accept an initial interview due to lack of travel funds provided by ACC.
- The committee is concerned about the quality of a diluted pool when not all applications are given to the committee and whether or not this is either legal or ethical.
- The committee requested advice from the Senate as to the direction that should next be taken.
The Faculty Senate passed the following proposal to be presented to Dr. Fonte:
The Senate strongly questions the hiring procedures being forced on Math faculty. The process raises serious questions of ethics and legality of the hiring process. The Senate finds the withholding of the applications and information from the hiring committee reprehensible. The process has been characterized by changing guidelines; changing numbers of positions to be filled and by ongoing contradictions that countermand written instructions and procedures. The result is a muddled process grossly unfair to applicants, committee members, and all involved.
Meeting adjourned.
Denise Anding, Patrick Goines, and Dolores Segura were absent.
