Geography/GIS Degree and Certificate Plans
The Geography Department offers an Associate of Arts degree in Geography and an Associate of Arts degree in GIS. The GIS department offers two GIS certificates and an Associate of Applied Science in GIS.

Associate of Arts in Geography

This degree is intended to provide a general geography education that assists students to think critically, and to apply the basic knowledge, skill, and principles of geography to everyday life and their chosen careers; and to prepare students for transfer and success in a baccalaureate degree granting institution

Asssociate of Arts in GIS (Geographic Information Systems)

This degree is designed to provide students with an understanding of the methods and theories of GIS that will allow students to pursue higher degrees in GIS/Geography. This degree is meant to be the first two years of a 4-year degree in Geography with a concentration in GIS. All of the courses in this degree are academic courses and will usually transfer towards a 4-year degree at most public colleges and universities in Texas.

Asssociate of Applied Science in GIS (Geographic Information Systems)

This degree is designed to provide students with the GIS job knowledge and skills that they need to enter the GIS field as a GIS Analyst. Most of the courses in this degree are workforce courses that may not transfer towards a 4-year degree.

Level II Certificate in GIS (Geographic Information Systems)

This certificate is designed to provide students with the GIS job knowledge and skills that they need to enter the GIS field as a GIS Technician. This certificate is also designed for students who already have a degree and would like to augment their GIS knowledge and skills. Most of the courses in this degree are workforce courses that may not transfer towards a 4-year degree.

Level I Certificate in GIS (Geographic Information Systems)

This certificate is designed to provide students with the GIS job knowledge and skills that they need entry-level GIS Technician jobs. This certificate is also designed for students who already have a degree and would like to augment their GIS knowledge and skills. Most of the courses in this degree are workforce courses that may not transfer towards a 4-year degree.
